Marble Mountains Da Nang: Caves, Pagodas and Steps
Cool caves and hot stairs share one hill, so choose your route before you climb.
The Marble Mountains work best as a ninety-minute stop between Da Nang and Hoi An. Use the lift if the day is hot, walk one cave route and one pagoda, then leave while you are still enjoying it. It is an easy add-on, not a full day.
What are the Marble Mountains?
They are a cluster of limestone and marble hills rising from flat land near the coast, known locally as Ngu Hanh Son. Pagodas, caves and shrines are tucked into the rock, and a gateway leads to Huyen Khong Cave1.
You climb stairs, pass through tunnels and step into big chambers lit by shafts of light. It feels like a small adventure with incense in the air.
Who will enjoy it most?
First-timers love the mix of nature and temples. Friends enjoy the caves and the viewpoints, and culture-seekers like the shrines carved into the rock.
If anyone has trouble with stairs, the lift and a short route make it comfortable. If you dislike crowds, go early.
How do the lift and the caves work?
A lift carries you partway up, which saves the longest climb. From there, you choose between a main cave route and shorter side paths to pagodas and viewpoints.
- Main cave: the biggest chamber, with shrines and light from above.
- Pagodas: quieter, with shade and places to sit.
- Viewpoints: worth a short climb for a look over the coast.
- Side tunnels: narrow and steep, skip them with elders.
Confirm ticket types and lift access at the entrance, because prices and rules change.
How long do you need?
Plan about ninety minutes: the lift and a first viewpoint, then the main cave, then a pagoda and a rest. Go slowly. Rushing across stairs is how people slip.
When should you go?
Morning is best. Da Nang’s wet and typhoon season runs from September to December and the dry season from January to August2. Polished stone becomes slippery in rain, so wear shoes with grip. Our rainy months guide lists backups.
How do you get there from Malaysia?
Fly into Da Nang. Kuala Lumpur to Da Nang is listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air3. The mountains sit between the city and Hoi An, so a car or Grab fits easily, and Hoi An lies about 28 km south of Da Nang4.
What about families, seniors and Muslim travellers?
Families can make it a treasure hunt for shrines and light shafts. Seniors should use the lift and skip steep tunnels. Our Central Vietnam for seniors guide lists more easy stops.
Dress modestly in pagodas, with shoulders and knees covered. For halal meals, never assume a restaurant is certified. Look for a displayed certificate and ask who issued it.
When is another stop a better choice?
If your priority is a calm beach morning, skip the mountains and stay by the sea. If you want a full cultural day, read Da Nang, Hoi An or Hue. For a deeper look at the city itself, see Da Nang.

Common questions
How long should you spend at Marble Mountains?
About ninety minutes is a comfortable plan for the main cave, a couple of pagodas and one viewpoint. Add time if you love photography or want to climb to every viewpoint. If you also stop at nearby stone-carving workshops, allow a little more time and keep the shopping optional.
Is there a lift, and is it worth using?
There is a lift that takes you part of the way up, and it is worth using if the heat is high or anyone has tired knees. It saves the longest climb, though you still walk stairs inside the site. Ask about the lift ticket at the entrance before you buy.
Are the caves suitable for children and seniors?
The main cave is large and easy to enter, but steps are uneven and can be damp. Children enjoy it with supervision. Seniors can see the main cave slowly and skip narrow side passages. Wear shoes with grip, because polished stone gets slippery.
When is the best time of day to go?
Go in the morning, when the stone is cooler and fewer groups arrive. Late afternoon can also work for softer light. Avoid midday heat on open steps, and check the weather in the wet season, because rain makes the stone slick.
How does it fit with Hoi An or My Khe?
It sits on the road between Da Nang and Hoi An, so it works as a stop on the way. Plenty of visitors pair it with a beach morning or a Hoi An evening. Keep the plan light, because stairs plus sun can tire you before dinner.
