Mekong Delta: What to Expect and How Long

The delta rewards slow mornings, so decide early whether you have one day or two.

The Mekong Delta is South Vietnam’s green, watery side: canals, orchards, floating markets and villages that live by the river. For most Malaysians on short leave, a single day trip from Ho Chi Minh City is enough. Stay overnight only if you want the early market or a slower pace.

What is the Mekong Delta?

It is the flat, river-cut land south-west of Ho Chi Minh City, where the Mekong splits into a web of channels before the sea. Life here runs on boats, orchards and markets.

This is the south, so the climate has two seasons1. The rainy season starts in May2. Expect heat, humidity and sudden showers rather than cool days.

Which stops make up the delta?

Each stop offers a different feel, so choose by what you want to see:

  • Ben Tre: coconut country with narrow canals. See Ben Tre and compare it in Ben Tre vs My Tho.
  • My Tho: the nearest easy day-trip town, with orchards and boat rides.
  • Can Tho: the delta’s main city, built around its river and floating market. See Can Tho.
  • Chau Doc: a border town with Cham and Khmer communities. See Chau Doc.

Day trip or overnight?

Choose the day trip if you have a short trip and one free day. Choose an overnight if you want to see the floating market at first light, or if the road is too long for a parent or child in one day.

Our day trip versus overnight guide goes through this by reader type. If you stay over, compare bases in Can Tho or Chau Doc.

How long should you give it?

One day is a real taste. Two days, with a night in Can Tho, lets you see a floating market and a quieter canal. A third day suits return visitors who want Chau Doc.

On a short trip, do not combine the delta with an island on the same days. Use the short trip guide to pick two stops.

When should you go?

The dry season is easier for boats and photography, while the rainy season brings lush green and afternoon downpours. Check current weather in our weather by month guide.

Heat is steady all year. Start early, rest at midday and carry water.

How do you get there from Malaysia?

You fly into Ho Chi Minh City first. For arrival options from Malaysia, see KL to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang. From there, a tour minibus or a private car with a driver reaches the delta.

Plan a large part of the day for the road. Do not book an evening flight on the same day.

How do you get around once there?

Boats do most of the work. Grab operates in Vietnam5, but in small delta towns a pre-arranged car is easier. Ask your operator what is included before paying.

Use our package comparator to compare what each tour covers.

What about families, seniors and Muslim travellers?

For toddlers, ask for life jackets in the right size and avoid long boat rides without shade. For seniors, pick stops with flat walking and a place to sit.

A Sunni Cham community lives around Chau Doc, in An Giang3. Chau Doc’s western boundary borders Cambodia4. Never assume a place is halal: look for a displayed certificate and ask who issued it.

When is another place a better choice?

If you want cool air or heritage towns, look at the north or centre. If you want a beach, choose Vung Tau or Phu Quoc. For the whole region, read South Vietnam, and see more in Regions and where to go.

Common questions

Is the Mekong Delta worth a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City?

Yes, if you want a taste of river life without changing hotels. A day trip gives you boats, canals, fruit and a village lunch. You will spend a good part of the day on the road, so choose one stop and enjoy it rather than packing in three.

When is an overnight stay worth it?

Stay overnight if you want the floating market in the early morning, or if you dislike long road legs in one day. Can Tho is the usual base. It also suits photographers, who get softer light on the water at the start of the day.

Is the Mekong Delta suitable for elderly parents?

Mostly, with care. The sights are flat, but small boats, uneven jetties and wooden steps are common. Ask the tour about boat boarding, shade and rest stops. Choose a private car if a parent tires on long drives.

Can Muslim travellers eat well in the delta?

It needs planning. Halal options are limited outside the larger towns, so ask your driver or operator in advance. A Sunni Cham community lives around Chau Doc. Look for a displayed certificate and ask who issued it, because pork-free is not the same as certified.

What should I wear and bring?

Light cotton, a hat, sunscreen and a rain layer. Closed shoes with grip help on wet jetties. Carry water and small notes for stalls. Keep your phone in a pouch on boats, because splashes and sudden showers happen.
