Mekong Delta

Chau Doc: Border Town on the Mekong

Chau Doc is for return visitors who want the delta's quieter, more mixed edge.

Chau Doc is the Mekong Delta’s far western border town, where Vietnamese, Cham and Khmer communities live side by side. It suits return visitors and slow travellers who have a spare day. For a first, short trip, Can Tho is the easier overnight.

What is Chau Doc?

Chau Doc is a ward in An Giang Province, and its western boundary borders Cambodia1. It sits on the river, with floating fish farms, stilt houses and a hill dotted with temples.

The mix of communities is what sets it apart. Visitors come for the river, the mosques and the sense of being near a border rather than a big city.

Who will enjoy Chau Doc most?

Return visitors, culture seekers and Muslim families will find the most here. Photographers also like the river light and the stilt-house villages.

If you have only one free day from Ho Chi Minh City, this is too far. Choose a closer stop from our Mekong Delta day trip or overnight guide.

What is there to see?

  • River life: boats, floating fish farms and stilt houses along the channel.
  • Cham villages: Sunni Cham communities live around Chau Doc2, and visitors can see mosques and daily village life.
  • Temples and hill views: a temple-covered hill rising from the flat land.
  • Kahramanlar Rahmet Mosque: in An Giang, described as Vietnam’s largest, opened in 20173.

How long should you stay?

One night is usually enough. Arrive in the afternoon, see the river and village at a slow pace, and leave the next morning.

If you also want the Can Tho floating market, add that first and treat Chau Doc as the next leg. Compare the two in Can Tho or Chau Doc.

How do you get there from Malaysia?

You fly into Ho Chi Minh City and continue by road, passing through Can Tho. See KL to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang for arrival options.

Plan most of a day for the transfer. A private car with a driver is steadier than a shared bus. Confirm what is included before you pay.

Practical tips

Bring modest, light clothing if you plan to visit mosques and villages. Carry water and small notes for stalls. Ask your hotel to help confirm boat times the evening before.

Halal choices exist but need checking. Our South Vietnam halal guide lists the questions to ask.

When is another place a better choice?

If you want an easy first Mekong experience, choose Ben Tre or My Tho. For the main delta base, read Can Tho. If you are thinking of crossing into Cambodia, read how to check entry rules from official sources.

Common questions

Is Chau Doc worth the extra travel from Can Tho or Ho Chi Minh City?

It is worth it if you want to see a more mixed side of the delta and have a spare day or two. For a first short visit, Can Tho or a closer day trip is easier. Chau Doc suits return visitors and slow travellers.

Is Chau Doc good for Muslim travellers?

It can be, as a Sunni Cham community lives around the town. Do not assume any restaurant is halal. Look for a displayed certificate and ask who issued it, or speak to Muslim-owned places about the kitchen and suppliers.

Can you cross into Cambodia from Chau Doc?

The town sits on the border, and river routes and roads link to Cambodia. Border rules and operators change, so check official entry sources and confirm the route with your operator before you plan around it.
