Da Nang, Hoi An, Ba Na: Short-Leave Plan

Three headline stops fitted around your flight, so short leave is not spent in transit.

Four days and three nights is enough for Da Nang, Hoi An and Ba Na Hills if you use one base and let your flight decide day one. This plan shows what to do with a morning, afternoon or late landing. It also names the day to drop if the weather turns.

Who is this itinerary for?

It suits first-timers on short leave, couples, and small families who want the headline stops without a hotel change. Da Nang is listed with direct flights from Kuala Lumpur on AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Check which airline fits your leave and compare arrivals in KL to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang.

The route at a glance

  • Day 1: land in Da Nang and settle, then match your arrival time to the right activity.
  • Day 2: Ba Na Hills in the morning, rest, then the beach.
  • Day 3: Hoi An from the afternoon into the lantern evening.
  • Day 4: a free morning and your flight home.

How does your flight arrival change day one?

Your landing time sets the first day. Check your airline for the real time, because schedules change.

  • Morning landing: drop bags, eat, and walk the beachfront or visit Marble Mountains before the heat peaks.
  • Afternoon landing: check in, rest, and take a gentle beach walk with an early dinner.
  • Late-night landing: day one is sleep only, so make day two the lighter day and keep Ba Na Hills for day three.

What does each day look like?

Day 1: arrive in Da Nang

Whatever your landing time, keep the first day simple. Eat close to your hotel and go to bed early. Short leave works best when you do not burn the first evening.

Day 2: Ba Na Hills

Leave in the morning. Ba Na Hills is at 1,500 m and 42 km from Da Nang2, and its cable car is 5,801 m long3. The higher air is cooler and cloud can arrive in the afternoon, so go early.

Sun World’s page shows a closing time of 22:00 and notes that hours may change4. Do not plan to stay until closing; two to three unhurried hours up top is plenty. Return to the city by mid-afternoon and rest. Read Ba Na Hills: the cable car, French Village and crowds for the layout.

Day 3: Hoi An

Hoi An lies some 28 km south of Da Nang5, so the drive is short. Arrive in the afternoon, when the heat eases, and walk the old town slowly. Ancient Town joined the World Heritage List in 19996.

Stay for the lantern-lit evening and eat in the old town before the lanes thicken. Return to Da Nang late but not rushed. If you want a slower Hoi An, read the Hoi An guide.

Day 4: free morning and flight home

Leave a calm morning. A coffee, a short walk and an early airport run end the trip well. Do not book a tour that returns close to your flight.

Where should you stay?

Stay in Da Nang for all three nights. Choose the beach side for rest or the river side for restaurants. If you would rather sleep in Hoi An, Da Nang or Hoi An as a base explains the trade-offs.

How can you adjust it?

If it rains, drop Ba Na Hills first and use the rainy-day plan. If you are tired, shorten Hoi An to the evening only. With an extra day, consider the Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue circuit.

What should you book ahead?

  • Flights, first, because they set the order.
  • A private car or ride for Ba Na Hills.
  • A Hoi An evening ride back to Da Nang.
  • Muslim-friendly meal stops, checked in advance.

What will it cost?

Price flights, three nights, rides, entry tickets and meals as separate lines. Prices change by season, so use the trip budget builder. Run each day through the travel-day checker, and browse all itineraries for other short-leave plans.

Share your flight times in and out, and the size of your group, and we can place Ba Na Hills and Hoi An where the weather and your energy are best.

Common questions

Can Da Nang, Hoi An and Ba Na Hills fit in four days and three nights?

Yes, with one base and no extra stops. Use Da Nang as the base, give Ba Na Hills one half day, give Hoi An an afternoon and evening, and keep the last morning free. Adding Hue or My Son turns it into a rushed trip.

How does my flight time change the plan?

A morning arrival lets you start with the beach or Marble Mountains on day one. An afternoon arrival suits a gentle beach walk and early dinner. A late-night arrival means day one is only sleep, so move Ba Na Hills to day two. Check your airline for the real time.

Should we stay in Da Nang or Hoi An?

For four days and three stops, Da Nang is easier because it is near the airport and Ba Na Hills, and Hoi An is a short drive south. Stay in Hoi An only if you prefer old-town evenings. Our base-choice guide compares them.

How early should we go to Ba Na Hills?

Go in the morning, before the crowds and the afternoon cloud. It sits at 1,500 m, 42 km from Da Nang, so it is cooler and can be misty. Sun World shows a 22:00 closing time but says hours may change, so confirm it.

What do we drop if it rains?

Drop Ba Na Hills first, because cable cars and hilltop views suffer in cloud. Keep Hoi An for a dry evening or use the old town's covered houses and cafes. Our rainy-day plan lists indoor swaps.
