One Base or Two in Central Vietnam
You are comparing one hotel with two: count the packing, the transfer and the shopping rounds.
On four nights or fewer, stay in one place and use day trips. Choose Da Nang for beach and flexibility, Hoi An for the old town and tailoring. From five or six nights, a split stay with a single hotel move can work, but only if you accept losing a morning to it.
Which base suits which traveller?
Think about what you do after dark, not only by day.
- Da Nang base: beach mornings, more restaurant choice, easy airport access and shopping malls.
- Hoi An base: walkable lantern streets, tailors on your doorstep and a slower pace.
- Two bases: the beach for the first nights, the old town for the last, with one move between.
- Shoppers: stay near the tailors, since fittings need more than one visit.
How do one base and two compare?
| Question | One base | Two bases |
|---|---|---|
| Packing | Unpack once | Pack and unpack again |
| Lost mornings | None | One morning at the move |
| Transfer cost | Day-trip rides only | Day trips plus the hotel move |
| Flexibility | Easy to swap days around | Fixed by hotel dates |
| Best for | Short stays, toddlers, elders | Longer stays, couples |
Hoi An lies some 28 km south of Da Nang1, so a day trip from either base is short. My Son is about 68 km south-west of Da Nang and 36 km south of Hoi An2, which makes it a morning outing from both. Grab operates in Vietnam3, so a ride is simple to arrange.
What does the second hotel really cost?
It costs time before money. A move uses a morning for check-out, a ride and a late check-in. Your packing effort also doubles, and any stuffed shopping bags travel with you.
The money side depends on your quotes. Enter the room rates and transfer fares you receive into the trip budget builder and compare the two plans line by line. Do not assume the split stay is cheaper or dearer.
What should shoppers do?
Book the tailor visit in your first days. Give the shop time to prepare the fitting, then leave one calm evening for it.
A base in Hoi An makes this easy. A base in Da Nang works too, if you set aside a fixed evening for the ride.

Common questions
Is one base enough for four nights?
Yes. With four nights or fewer, one base wastes the least time. Pick Da Nang if you want beach, a bigger choice of restaurants and easy airport access. Pick Hoi An if the old town matters most. Day trips cover the other place easily.
When do two bases make sense?
From about five or six nights, a split stay starts to pay off. You spend the first nights on one coast and the last in the old town, with only one hotel move. Avoid splitting if you travel with toddlers or elders and want fewer bags to repack.
Where should I stay if I plan to get clothes made?
Hoi An, or very close to it. A tailor needs a measuring visit and at least one fitting, so staying near the shops saves return trips. If you stay in Da Nang, book the first visit early in the trip and leave a free evening for the fitting.
Does moving hotels cost much?
It costs time first. Each move uses a morning for check-out, a transfer and a late check-in. Money costs depend on your quotes, so enter them in the budget builder rather than guessing, and compare the split stay with the single base.
