A Slow Week in Hoi An, One Hotel Only

Unpack once, then spend the week cooking, cycling and sitting by the sea.

If you dislike packing and unpacking, Hoi An is a good place to stay put. This plan keeps one hotel for the whole week and gives each day a single anchor: a cooking class, a ride through the countryside, a beach afternoon. Everything else is rest.

Who is this week for?

It suits couples who want a slow trip and food lovers who like to learn how a dish is made. It also works for anyone with a full week of leave who is tired of changing hotels. Fast sightseers will find it too gentle, and for them a longer circuit such as one week based in Da Nang fits better.

You fly into Da Nang, which is listed with direct Kuala Lumpur flights on AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Hoi An lies some 28 km south of the airport city2, so the transfer is short.

The week at a glance

  • Day 1: arrive, settle in, an easy first walk.
  • Day 2: the old town at a gentle pace.
  • Day 3: market visit and cooking class.
  • Day 4: a free morning, then the beach.
  • Day 5: a countryside cycling day.
  • Day 6: a half-day outing or a second beach day.
  • Day 7: a last breakfast and the transfer to the airport.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive and slow down

Keep the first evening empty. Check in, shower, eat something simple near the hotel and take a short walk. A tired body enjoys a slow start more than a big one.

Day 2: the old town, early and late

Hoi An Ancient Town joined the World Heritage List in 19993. Go in the cool of the morning, walk the lanes and old houses, then come back to the hotel when the heat rises.

Return after sunset, when the lanterns are lit. The Japanese bridge is a wooden bridge about 10 m long, built at the start of the 17th century4, and it is worth crossing once in each kind of light.

Day 3: market and cooking class

This is your anchor food day. Go with a class that includes a market visit, then cook and eat what you made. Ask who the teacher is and how many people are in the group before you pay.

Afternoons after a class are best spent flat on a sunbed. If you eat halal, tell the school in advance and ask about the kitchen and suppliers, rather than assuming.

Day 4: a free morning, then the beach

Sleep in. Take a late breakfast, then cycle or ride to the sea in the afternoon, when the sun is softer. Stay for a sunset drink and a simple dinner on the sand.

Day 5: cycling through the countryside

Choose a flat route through paddies and vegetable gardens, and start early. Carry water, wear a hat and agree a stop for coffee. If anyone is not a confident cyclist, hire a driver and walk the lanes instead.

Day 6: your flexible day

Use this day for the weather. On a clear day, add a half-day to My Son, about 36 km south of Hoi An5, or simply return to the beach. On a wet day, book a second class, a spa afternoon or a long lunch.

Day 7: a calm departure

Pack the night before. Have breakfast without checking the clock, then travel to the airport with a comfortable margin.

Which side of Hoi An should you stay on?

Pick the old-town side if you want to walk out to dinner every night. Pick the beach side if you want quiet and a swim before breakfast. A base in between suits a full week, because both are a short ride away.

Choose areas, not hotel names, and compare rates yourself. Our Hoi An guide explains the zones in more detail.

How do you plan for rain?

Da Nang lists September to December as its wet and typhoon season6. In those months, hold the cooking class for the wettest day and keep the beach and cycling days flexible. Our central Vietnam wet-weather backup plan lists indoor options.

What should you book ahead?

  • Your flights, because they set every other date.
  • The cooking class, especially at weekends.
  • A hotel in your chosen zone, near festival dates.
  • Halal arrangements, checked in advance with an issuer you can name.

How much will it cost?

Price the week in lines: flights, seven nights, the class, the cycling day, transfers, meals and extras. Rates change by season, so put today’s quotes into the trip budget builder rather than trusting a figure from a page.

If a week in one place feels too still, read one base or many hotels or try two bases in central Vietnam. Browse all itineraries for other ideas.

Common questions

Is a full week in Hoi An too long?

Not if you like a slow rhythm. The old town can be seen in a day or two, but a week gives you a cooking class, a cycle through the countryside, beach days and real rest. If you get restless easily, spend five nights here and add a night in Da Nang instead.

Should we stay in the old town or near the beach?

For a week, a quiet base between the two works well, a short bicycle ride from each. The old town is lovely at night but crowded and noisy. The beach side is calmer, yet you will rely on bicycles or Grab for dinner. Pick the rhythm you want most.

How do we handle rain during the week?

Keep the cooking class and the market visit for the wettest day, since both are mostly indoors. Move cycling and beach time to the clear days. Da Nang lists September to December as its wet and typhoon months, so leave those days loose and book nothing that cannot be moved.

Can we do this with a toddler or grandparents?

Yes, with changes. Use a hotel with a pool, shorten the cycling to a short, flat loop or hire a driver, and keep one outing per day. Evening lanes are flat but crowded, so go early, and let older relatives rest after lunch.
