Which Vietnam Arrival City Fits Your Trip
Land where your route starts, and your short leave goes to the holiday, not the road.
Pick the airport nearest your first night. Hanoi suits a northern route, Da Nang suits beaches and heritage, and Ho Chi Minh City suits food and the south. A wrong choice costs you a half day on the road before the holiday starts.
Which arrival city suits which trip?
Look at the first stop on your route, then work backwards to the airport.
| Arrival city | Best match for | Think about |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi | Northern route, old streets, cool air | Noi Bai is far from the centre |
| Da Nang | Beach base, Hoi An, Hue, families | Hue has no direct international flights |
| Ho Chi Minh City | Food, city energy, the Mekong Delta | A long way from the north and centre |
Fares and schedules are not in this table on purpose. They change, so check the airline sites for your dates.
What do the airline lists show?
Hanoi from Kuala Lumpur is listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Da Nang has the same four2. Ho Chi Minh City is listed with Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia3.
More choice of airline means more choice of departure time, which matters when you are trying to keep the first day usable.
How far is the airport from your first night?
Noi Bai is about 35 km from central Hanoi4, so plan a proper transfer rather than a quick hop. Da Nang’s airport is close to the city and the beach, and Hoi An lies some 28 km south of Da Nang5.
Hue’s airport has no direct international routes6, and Da Nang is 80 km south of it7. For Hue, you fly into Da Nang and go by road.
When does an open-jaw ticket help?
If your route runs north to south or the reverse, book an open-jaw ticket, which means flying into one city and home from another: arrive at one end and leave from the other. You skip the long journey back to the start. A Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City route is the classic case.
Check the price of the open-jaw option against a return ticket before you commit. If it costs more, the saved day may still be worth paying for. Use the travel-day checker to see how much leave each move takes.
Which city for which traveller?
- Seniors and toddlers: Da Nang. Short transfers and a beach base mean fewer long days.
- Food lovers: Ho Chi Minh City.
- Short leave, first trip: whichever airport is nearest your first stop.
- Culture and cooler air: Hanoi.
If you are still choosing between the first two cities, read Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City: which trip suits you. If the whole north versus centre question is open, start with north versus central Vietnam.
What should you check before booking?
- Your first-night area, then the airport nearest it.
- The airlines listed for your dates, on their own sites.
- Whether an open-jaw fare beats a return fare.
- Your arrival time, so the transfer is not in the middle of the night.

Common questions
Which arrival city is best for a first trip?
It depends on where your route starts. Hanoi suits a northern route with Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh. Da Nang suits a beach-and-heritage route with Hoi An. Ho Chi Minh City suits food, city life and the Mekong Delta. Pick the airport nearest your first night, not the one with the bargain-looking fare.
Can I fly into one city and home from another?
Yes. This is called an open-jaw ticket. It can save a full day because you do not travel back to where you started. For example, you could land in Hanoi and fly home from Ho Chi Minh City. Compare the price with a return ticket, since open-jaw fares can differ.
Is a direct flight to Da Nang available from Kuala Lumpur?
Da Nang to Kuala Lumpur is listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air. Schedules change by season, so confirm on the airline sites for your dates. If your dates show no direct flight, Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi may still work with a short domestic hop.
How far is the airport from the city in each case?
Noi Bai is about 35 km from central Hanoi, so plan a real transfer. Da Nang's airport sits close to the city and the beach, which makes the first evening easier. For Ho Chi Minh City, check your hotel's transfer notes before you land.
What if my trip combines two regions?
Fly into one end of the route and out of the other, then link the two with a domestic flight or an overnight train. Our travel-day checker shows how much of a day each move costs. Do not try to cover both regions on a short week.
