Region choice

Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City: Which Suits You?

Two big cities with different characters: choose by the trip you want, not by the sights list.

Choose Hanoi for old streets, history on foot and cooler air. Choose Ho Chi Minh City for a big, energetic city with warm weather and easy day trips. The decision gets simpler once you know your departure airport and travel month.

Which city suits which traveller?

Match the city to your situation first.

  • Culture and history on foot: Hanoi.
  • Cooler months and photography: Hanoi.
  • Warm weather all year and food markets: Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Short leave with easy day trips: Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Flying from Penang, Kota Kinabalu or Johor Bahru: Ho Chi Minh City, for a direct flight.
  • Toddlers or grandparents who prefer shorter outings: Ho Chi Minh City.

Hanoi is a city of about 8.7 million people8. Ho Chi Minh City is larger, at 14,002,598 people in 2025 for the city proper9. You feel the difference when you cross a road.

What is Hanoi like, and what are its day trips?

Hanoi’s heritage runs deep. The Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long was inscribed in 201010. You can spend days wandering lanes, lakes and cafes without leaving the city.

Day trips take more effort. Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay each ask for most of a day, and Tam Dao is a cooler hill escape. Read Short breaks near Hanoi to see how they fit your days.

What is Ho Chi Minh City like, and what are its day trips?

It is warm, fast and full of food. The Cu Chi tunnel complex is described as 121 km long, with visitor sites at Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc11. Vung Tau is a coastal weekend.

Day trips here tend to be shorter than Hanoi’s. See Vung Tau and the Ho Chi Minh City guide.

Does the weather change the choice?

Hanoi’s hottest month is July at a mean of 29.2 C and its coolest is January at 16.4 C6. Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season December to April7.

So a December to February trip is warm and dry in Ho Chi Minh City and cool in Hanoi. Pick the feel you want. Our weather by month guide shows both side by side.

How do the flights decide it?

Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi is listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Ho Chi Minh City to Kuala Lumpur is listed with Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia2.

Penang3, Kota Kinabalu4 and Johor Bahru5 each list Ho Chi Minh City as their only Vietnam destination. If you fly from one of those, the south is the direct choice. See KL to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang for more.

What about Muslim travellers?

Hanoi’s Al-Noor Mosque was built between 1885 and 1890 and holds about 200 people12. Saigon Central Mosque was completed in 193513. Confirm prayer times with each mosque, and plan every meal in advance.

Common questions

Which city is better for a first trip, Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City?

Hanoi suits you if you want old streets, history on foot and cooler months for photography. Ho Chi Minh City suits you if you want an energetic big city with easy day trips and warm weather all year. If you cannot decide, let your departure airport and travel month break the tie.

Which city is easier for short leave?

Both work, but pick based on day trips. From Hanoi, the usual outings are Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay, each needing most of a day. From Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi and Vung Tau are shorter. If you only have a few days, the south has a gentler plan.

Which city is better for Muslim travellers?

Both need advance planning. Hanoi has Al-Noor Mosque on Hang Luoc Street, built between 1885 and 1890, while Ho Chi Minh City has Saigon Central Mosque, completed in 1935. Use each mosque as an anchor for finding Muslim-owned places nearby, and confirm prayer times with the mosque.

Can I fly direct from Penang, Kota Kinabalu or Johor Bahru?

To Ho Chi Minh City, yes: each airport lists it as its only Vietnam destination, served by AirAsia. Hanoi is not listed from those airports, so you would connect through Kuala Lumpur. Check airline sites for current schedules before you plan around a route.

Does the weather favour one city?

It can. Hanoi has four seasons and a cool January, while Ho Chi Minh City is warm all year with a rainy season roughly May to November. A year-end trip is easier to defend in Ho Chi Minh City's dry months, and a cooler-weather trip points to Hanoi.
