Da Nang City Guide: Beach City Base Explained

You want a beach, a real city and an easy airport in one place.

Choose Da Nang if you want a beach, a real city and an easy airport in one stop. Pick the beach strip for sea and space, the river side for food and the city feel, and Hoi An if old-town evenings matter more. On a short trip, the right zone saves more time than any attraction list.

What kind of city is Da Nang?

Da Nang is a coastal city in central Vietnam, with a long beach on one side and the Han River on the other. It is modern and easy, with wide roads and plenty of hotels.

Hoi An lies some 28 km south1, which makes Da Nang a practical base for both the city and the old town. Our Da Nang or Hoi An for your base guide helps you decide.

Which zone should you stay in?

Pick by what you want your mornings to feel like.

  • Beach strip: hotels along the sand, with sea air and space. See My Khe Beach, Da Nang.
  • River and city side: food, markets and the bridges over the Han River, with more local life.
  • Son Tra Peninsula: resorts and viewpoints for nature and quiet.
  • An Thuong: a compact, walkable pocket of cafes near the beach.

How many days should you give it?

Two or three nights suit a beach-and-city stop. Four give room for a day trip to Hoi An or Ba Na Hills.

With one night, stay close to the airport side or the beach. You spend your time resting, not moving.

When should you go?

Central Vietnam has two seasons, not four. Da Nang’s wet and typhoon season runs from September to December and its dry season from January to August2. October is the wettest month, at about 628 mm of rain3.

For a beach holiday, aim for the dry months.

How do you get there from Malaysia?

Da Nang to Kuala Lumpur is listed as served by AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air4. Check airline sites for current schedules.

Penang lists only Ho Chi Minh City as its Vietnam route5, so plan a connection through Kuala Lumpur. Da Nang International Airport uses the code DAD6. For arrival tips and your first night, read Da Nang airport access and first-night stay.

What is there to see?

Group your days by direction.

  • Beach and coast: swimming, sunrise walks and seafood.
  • Marble Mountains: Ngu Hanh Son includes a gateway leading to Huyen Khong Cave7.
  • Ba Na Hills: it sits at 1,500 m, 42 km from Da Nang8. Plan most of a day.
  • Hoi An: the old town, an easy half-day or evening trip. See Hoi An old town and beaches.

How do you get around?

Grab operates in Vietnam9 and is the easy choice for most trips. The beach strip and city centre are close, so short rides cover them.

What about families, seniors and Muslim travellers?

Families usually find Da Nang easier than Hoi An, because beachfront hotels give pools, space and flat paths.

Seniors do well with a hotel near the beach, a lift and short outings.

Muslim travellers should plan meals ahead. Never assume a restaurant is halal. Look for a displayed certificate and ask who issued it. Our halal food access in Da Nang and Hoi An explains how to plan.

When is another place a better choice?

If you want old lanterns and slow evenings, stay in Hoi An. If you want a smaller, quieter beach town, look at Quy Nhon. For royal heritage, add Hue to the route.

How does it fit a route?

Da Nang is the usual gateway to central Vietnam. Pair it with Hoi An, and add Hue if you have the days.
