Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long: A First Northern Circuit

Three famous stops on short leave, with every transfer counted before you commit.

This is the classic northern triangle in five days: two nights in Hanoi, one in Ninh Binh and one at Ha Long Bay. Ninh Binh comes before Ha Long so your longest transfers stay in the middle of the trip, not on the day of your flight. Below, each leg is counted as a full block of time.

Who is this route for?

It suits first-timers on short leave who want a city, countryside and the bay without changing regions. Couples and families with school-age children can follow it as written.

Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi is listed as served by AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Check the current schedule, and note where your flight lands, because it decides Day 1.

The route at a glance

  • Day 1: arrive in Hanoi and rest.
  • Day 2: Hanoi old centre and food, at an easy pace.
  • Day 3: move to Ninh Binh for Trang An or Tam Coc and a countryside evening.
  • Day 4: return through Hanoi to Ha Long, board your boat or check in near the bay.
  • Day 5: a bay morning, then back to Hanoi for the flight.

How long is each transfer, really?

We give blocks of time, not hour counts, because traffic and pick-up points change them. Count each leg from the lobby of the place you leave to the check-in at the place you reach.

  • Airport to Hanoi hotel: Noi Bai is about 35 km north-east of downtown2. Plan a short block, longer at rush hour.
  • Hanoi to Ninh Binh: half a morning, door to door.
  • Ninh Binh to Ha Long: the longest day. It passes close to Hanoi, so treat it as most of a day.
  • Ha Long to Hanoi airport: half a day, with a buffer before check-in.

Run these through the travel-day checker with your own start times. If the total looks heavy, drop a night, not a rest hour.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive in Hanoi

Keep the evening empty. Check in, eat something simple and walk a quiet street near your hotel. If you land late, sleep, and let Day 2 start slowly.

Day 2: Hanoi at an easy pace

Start with the lake and the old streets in the cool morning, then rest after lunch. The Old Quarter lanes are best on foot, and the evening is for food. Read the Hanoi guide to choose a stay area.

Day 3: Ninh Binh countryside

Leave after breakfast. The Trang An landscape was inscribed as a World Heritage site on 23 June 20143, and a boat ride between the limestone hills is the highlight. Have lunch near the water and keep the late afternoon free.

If it is raining, choose a covered boat or move the outing to the next morning. See Ninh Binh for where to base yourself.

Day 4: Ninh Binh to Ha Long

This is the heavy day. Start early, return towards Hanoi and continue to the bay. Eat on the road and do not plan a sightseeing stop.

Ha Long Bay was inscribed in 19944. Board the boat in the afternoon, enjoy the view and have an early night.

Day 5: bay morning, then Hanoi

Wake to the quiet bay, have breakfast on board and disembark mid-morning. Then take the road back to Hanoi for your flight. Book a flight in the evening, not at midday.

Where should you stay?

Choose areas, not hotel names. In Hanoi, the Old Quarter is lively and the French Quarter calmer. In Ninh Binh, a stay near the water is quieter than the town. For the bay, decide between a cruise and a land base using Ha Long Bay.

How can you adjust it?

For four days, drop the Ha Long night and take the bay as a long day trip from Hanoi. For six days, add a second night in Ninh Binh. With seniors or toddlers, use the six-day version. The rainy season runs roughly April or May to October or November in the delta5, so leave slack on Day 4 and Day 5.

What should you book ahead?

  • Flights first, since they set every other date.
  • A private car or transfers for Day 3 and Day 4.
  • The cruise or bay stay, checking exactly what is included.
  • Meal arrangements for Muslim travellers, with a displayed certificate and an issuer you can name.

What will it cost?

Price it in lines: flights, four nights, three road legs, entries, meals and extras. Rates change by season, so enter today’s quotes in the trip budget builder.

Common questions

Is five days enough for Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long?

Yes, for a first look. Five days gives Hanoi two nights, Ninh Binh one and Ha Long one, with a calm final morning. Four days works if you drop the Ha Long night and take it as a day trip. Fewer than four days is better spent on Hanoi and one other stop.

Should we visit Ninh Binh before Ha Long?

Yes on this plan, because it keeps the long transfers out of your last day. You go Hanoi to Ninh Binh, back through Hanoi to Ha Long, then return to Hanoi for your flight. Our Ninh Binh versus Ha Long guide explains when to choose only one.

Is an overnight cruise worth it?

It is worth it if you want a night on the water and accept a rigid schedule. If you would rather keep control of time, stay on land near the bay and take a day boat. Check what the cruise actually includes before paying.

When should we go?

Choose the cooler, drier months for clearer views. The Red River Delta rainy season runs roughly April or May to October or November, peaking July to August. Typhoon warnings can cancel bay trips, so keep your last day flexible and read the weather guide.

Can we do this with grandparents or toddlers?

You can, but slow it down. Use six days, keep one main outing a day and rest after lunch. For elders, our low-stairs northern itinerary swaps steep stops for easier ones. Toddlers do better with the shorter bay option.
