Itinerary

A Central Vietnam Circuit for First-Timers

Three bases in one short trip, with the Hue overnight decided before you pay for it.

This circuit links three central bases in five to six days: Da Nang for the airport and beach, Hoi An for the old town, and Hue for the imperial city. The Hai Van leg is the one long day, and the Hue night is the one real decision. We make both explicit below, so you can plan with your leave in mind.

Who is this route for?

It suits first-timers on short leave who want culture, food and a beach without changing country regions. It also works for couples and for families with school-age children. For toddlers or grandparents, use the six-day version and keep one outing a day.

Fly into Da Nang. It is listed with direct Kuala Lumpur flights on AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Hue’s own airport has no direct international routes8.

The route at a glance

  • Day 1: arrive in Da Nang and settle by the beach.
  • Day 2: Marble Mountains, then move to Hoi An.
  • Day 3: a full, slow day in Hoi An.
  • Day 4: Hai Van leg to Hue, with an evening on the river side.
  • Day 5: the Imperial City, then back to Da Nang.
  • Day 6: a calm morning and your flight home.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive in Da Nang

Keep the first day empty. After your flight, check in, eat a simple dinner and walk the beachfront. A flat evening is a gentle start for everyone.

Day 2: Marble Mountains, then Hoi An

Go to the Marble Mountains in the morning, when it is cooler. The site includes a gateway leading to Huyen Khong Cave5. Take your time on the steps, and let seniors choose a shorter path.

After lunch, travel to Hoi An. It lies about 28 km south of Da Nang2, so the drive is short. Spend the evening on the old town lanes, early, before the crowds thicken.

Day 3: a slow day in Hoi An

Hoi An Ancient Town joined the World Heritage List in 19993. Start early, walk the old houses and markets, then rest in the heat of the day.

The Japanese bridge is a wooden bridge about 10 m long, built at the start of the 17th century4. Cross it in the late afternoon and stay on for the lantern-lit evening. If you want an extra sight, add My Son as a half-day outing instead of squeezing it in.

Day 4: the Hai Van leg to Hue

This is your long day, so start after breakfast and travel by private car. Hai Van Pass is a mountain road of about 21 km on National Route 1 between Da Nang and Hue6. The Hai Van Tunnel, opened in 2005, bypasses it and is 6.28 km long7.

Choose the pass in clear weather for the view. Choose the tunnel in rain or low cloud. Plan most of the day for the move and add a stop for coffee and photos.

In the evening, walk the river side of Hue and eat early. Do not plan anything big after this drive.

Day 5: the Imperial City, then back to Da Nang

Hue became the capital of unified Vietnam in 180210, and its monuments joined the World Heritage List in 199311. Go to the Imperial City when it opens, before the heat builds.

An adult ticket was listed at 200,000 VND (Vietnamese dong), about RM32 at Bank Negara’s rate of 0.0158 ringgit per 100 VND on 15 October 20261213. Prices and rates change, so confirm both before you go.

After lunch, return to Da Nang by road. Da Nang is the nearest international airport to Hue, 80 km from Phu Bai9, so end the day near your flight.

Day 6: fly home

Keep the morning free. A short walk, a last coffee and an unhurried airport run make the trip end well.

Should you stay a night in Hue?

Stay if you want the citadel and one tomb at a calm pace, or if seniors or small children are with you. That is the six-day plan above.

Skip the night if you want to keep two nights in Hoi An. Then do Hue as a long day trip on Day 4, return to Hoi An that evening and fly home on Day 5. It saves a night, but costs you most of a day on the road. Our guide Hue as a day trip or overnight stop helps you weigh it.

Where should you base yourself?

Choose areas, not hotel names, and compare rates yourself.

  • Da Nang: the beach side for rest, or the river side for restaurants.
  • Hoi An: near the old town for evenings, or toward the beach for quiet.
  • Hue: the river side, within reach of the citadel.

How can you adjust it?

For a shorter trip, drop Hue and keep Da Nang and Hoi An. For a slower trip, give Hoi An a third night. In the wet season, Da Nang lists September to December as its wet and typhoon months14, so keep days flexible and prepare a rainy-day backup for Hue and the Hai Van day.

What should you book ahead?

  • Your flights, first, since they set every other date.
  • A private car for Day 4 and Day 5.
  • A Hoi An stay in your preferred zone, especially near festivals.
  • Muslim-friendly meal stops, checked in advance, with a displayed certificate and an issuer you can name.

What will it cost?

Price it in lines: flights, three bases, the two road legs, tickets, meals and extras. Rates change by season, so put today’s quotes into the trip budget builder rather than trusting a number from a page.

Run your plan through the travel-day checker to see whether Day 4 is too heavy. For another local option, read Da Nang to Hue via Hai Van Pass: one-day route. To see other bases, open Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue and Regions and where to go.

If you share your leave dates and whether Hue gets a night, we can check the order of the three bases, the Hai Van leg and a sensible start day for your group.

Common questions

Is five or six days enough for Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue?

Yes, for a first visit. Five days covers Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue as a day trip. Six days adds a Hue night and a calm last morning, which is kinder if anyone is tired or elderly. Fewer than five days is better spent on Da Nang and Hoi An alone.

Should we stay a night in Hue?

Stay if you want the citadel and the tombs without rushing, or if the group includes seniors or small children. Skip the night if you only want a first look at the Imperial City and would rather keep a second night in Hoi An. Our Hue guide helps you weigh it.

Which months suit this route best?

The dry season on this coast is the easier window. Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December, so that stretch carries the most risk of cancelled outings. If you must travel then, keep the Hue and Hai Van days flexible and read the rainy-day plan.

Should we drive the Hai Van Pass or take the tunnel?

Take the pass in clear weather, because the view is the reason to use it. In rain or low cloud, the tunnel is faster and you lose little. Ask your driver which they plan and agree a stop for photos in advance. Never ask a driver to hurry on the bends.

Can grandparents or toddlers manage this circuit?

Yes, if you keep the pace gentle. Use the Hue night, limit each day to one main outing and rest after lunch. Hoi An's lanes are flat but crowded at night, so go early with a pushchair. The Imperial City is large, so choose one section and rest between sights.
