Vietnam Trip Cost From Malaysia, Explained
A headline price is not a trip total, so build yours line by line.

A headline price for Vietnam tells you what one part of the trip costs. It does not tell you what you will spend. Build the total from six lines (flights, stay, transfers, tickets, meals and extras), and a quote becomes something you can check.
Why is a headline price not a trip total?
An offer can advertise the line that is easiest to sell, such as the flight or the room. The other lines still arrive, just later and in smaller bills.
So two quotes for the same nights can sit far apart without either being wrong. They simply count different things. Your job is to find the lines each one leaves out.
What are the six lines of a realistic budget?
| Line | What it covers | How to price it today |
|---|---|---|
| Flights | Return fares, bags, seat choice | Check the airline sites for your dates |
| Stay | Rooms for each night, not per person | Compare rates by room and by area |
| Transfers | Airport, city and between-city legs | Ask for a private car or Grab quote |
| Tickets | Sights, shows, cable cars | Check each official site |
| Meals | Breakfast, street food, restaurants | Set a daily food line for your style |
| Extras | Insurance, SIM, tips, shopping | List them yourself |
Flights depend on your airport. Penang and Kota Kinabalu each list only Ho Chi Minh City as a direct Vietnam route12. A Hanoi or Da Nang trip from there can add a connection and another fare. Our arrival airport guide covers the choice.
How do you turn dong into ringgit?
Take a price in VND (Vietnamese dong), divide by one hundred and multiply by the rate per hundred dong. Bank Negara Malaysia showed 0.0158 MYR (ringgit) per 100 VND on 15 October 20263. The rate moves daily, so use today’s.
Three listed items show the sum. Bus 86 from Noi Bai Airport was listed at 45,000 VND4, about RM7. The Hue Imperial City adult ticket was listed at 200,000 VND5, about RM32. These are examples only, so confirm each before you go.
Paste your own quotes into the Vietnam cost worksheet and it will do the sums.
What does a package price usually leave out?
Check each of these before you pay:
- Entry tickets and cable cars.
- Lunches and dinners, and whether any meal is halal-friendly.
- Tips for drivers and guides.
- Travel insurance and airport extras.
- Free time with no plan, which still needs money.
Malaysians can enter Vietnam without a visa for 30 days6, so a short trip needs no visa line. For a longer stay, an e-visa (a visa you apply for online before you fly) is listed at US$25 for single entry7. Confirm on the official site first.
When does timing move the total?
Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, in 2027 falls on 6 February8, and the public holiday runs 7 or 9 days depending on the weekday9. Expect busier transport and closures, so budget a buffer or move your dates.
How do you check a quote?
- Ask whether prices are per person or per room.
- Ask for a written list of what is included and excluded.
- Ask which currency and which rate date it uses.
- Line two offers up in the package inclusion comparator.
If you plan to exchange money, Vietnam Airlines advises using the airport, local banks or authorised exchange counters10. Keep a small amount in cash for meals and local rides.
What should you do next?
Start with the Vietnam trip budget builder. Read the hidden costs checklist before you pay a deposit, and see budgeting without one daily average for why a per-day figure misleads. When you are ready to ask an agency, use what to include in a package enquiry. More cost advice is in Costs and package value.

Common questions
Why do two Vietnam quotes for the same dates look so different?
They usually include different lines. One may count flights and a hotel only, while the other adds airport transfers, tickets and meals. Compare the lines, not the headline. Ask each quote whether it is per person or per room, which currency it uses, and which day the rate was set.
What is left out of a package price most easily?
Entry tickets, some meals, tips, travel insurance and local transport between sights are the easy ones to miss. Spending money for drinks, snacks and small shopping is separate again. Ask for a written list of inclusions and exclusions, then use the package comparator to line two offers up.
How do I convert dong to ringgit quickly?
Use the Bank Negara rate and divide the dong price by one hundred, then multiply by the rate per hundred dong. Rates move daily, so use the rate on the day you are pricing. The cost worksheet does this for every line, and you can paste in your own quotes.
Which time of year raises the total the most?
Festival weeks and school holidays. Tet, Vietnam's Lunar New Year, brings long public holidays, busier transport and some closures, and it falls close to our own Chinese New Year. Check the date for your year before you fix flights, since this is when flexible dates save the most.
Should I book flights first or hotels first?
Flights first, because they set every other date and are the line least able to flex. Then book the stay for the nights you can confirm. Leave tickets and tours for later, since you can price them once you know your route and which day you will use them.
