Halal Food in Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City is the easiest Vietnamese city for halal meals once you know the checks.

For halal meals, Ho Chi Minh City is the easiest large city in Vietnam, and the streets around Saigon Central Mosque in District 1 are the place to start. Treat each restaurant as either certified, declared or unknown, and check it once more on the day. This page shows the three rings of the plan.

Where is the best place to start?

Start around Saigon Central Mosque. It was completed in 1935, with construction beginning on 21 December 19341, and it stands on Dong Du Street in District 1.

Muslim-run restaurants gather within walking distance of it. That makes District 1 a practical base, and the District 1 guide explains the area for visitors.

About 9% of Vietnam’s Muslims lived in Ho Chi Minh City in 19992. The community is long established, but still small. Vietnam’s 2019 census counted 70,934 Muslims in the whole country3.

How should you sort the halal claims?

Every claim in the city falls into one of three groups. Learn them and you stop guessing.

  • Certified: a halal certificate is on display. You can read the issuing body and the date.
  • Declared: the owner says it is halal but shows no paper. Ask who supplies the meat and whether the kitchen is shared.
  • Unknown: the sign says Muslim-friendly or pork-free, and nothing else. Treat it as a pork-free meal, not a halal one.

Our guide to certified, declared or unknown halal claims lists the exact questions. We do not name any business as halal-certified on this site, because that status belongs to the issuing body and changes.

What does the three-ring plan look like?

Ring one is the mosque streets in District 1. Eat here for the first checked meal after you land, and ask staff where they would send their own family.

Ring two is the rest of central Ho Chi Minh City. Meals are possible, but you must check each one. Print the phrases from how to say no pork in Vietnamese and show them at the counter.

Ring three is everything beyond the centre, including day trips. Pack snacks and eat the main meal before or after. Muslim communities do live in the Mekong Delta around Chau Doc4, but a short day trip cannot depend on them.

What about prayer and the rest of the day?

Saigon Central Mosque is your anchor for prayer as well. Confirm opening and prayer times on the day, since the bank has no schedule. Our meal and prayer checks lists what to confirm with a hotel, driver or tour operator.

For the south as a whole, read South Vietnam for Muslim travellers. The wider Ho Chi Minh City guide covers the rest, and the food and daily travel hub links the other cities.

Common questions

Where do Muslim travellers eat in Ho Chi Minh City?

Most start around Saigon Central Mosque on Dong Du Street in District 1, where Muslim-run places cluster close to the mosque. District 1 is also a convenient base for visitors, so a checked meal is rarely far. Always confirm each place on the day, because owners and menus change.

What is the difference between certified and declared?

Certified means a halal certificate is on display and you can read who issued it. Declared means the owner tells you the food is halal but shows nothing. Both can be honest. Only the first gives you something to check, so ask for the certificate and the issuing body before you sit down.

Is Ho Chi Minh City easier than Hanoi for halal meals?

Usually yes, because the city is larger and has a longer-established Muslim community around the mosque. That said, it is still a small community in a country that counted 70,934 Muslims in 2019. Plan the same way you would in Hanoi and keep a backup meal.

Can I find halal food in the Mekong Delta?

Muslim communities live in the Mekong Delta around Chau Doc, but a Mekong day trip from the city is too short to depend on them. Pack snacks and eat the main meal in the city before or after. For a stay around Chau Doc, plan the meals with a driver beforehand.

Do I need to carry my own food?

Carry a few shelf-stable snacks for travel days, early starts and tours that stop at ordinary restaurants. In the city itself you will have more choice. Tell tour operators and drivers about your needs in writing before the day, and confirm again at the first stop.
