North, Central or South: Pick Your Route
Tell us your month and what you love, and see which region suits you.
The route chooser suggests one region of Vietnam for your month, your days and your interests, and names a second choice. For a first trip with limited leave, one region with one flight in and out usually protects the most sightseeing time.
What does this tool help you decide?
It answers the question first-timers ask most: north, central or south? You pick the month, the number of days on the ground, what matters most to you, and whether anyone needs an easier pace.
The result is a starting point for a conversation with a planner, not a final itinerary.
How do I use it, step by step?
- Choose the month you will be in Vietnam.
- Enter the days you will actually spend there, not counting time at home.
- Tick anything that matters most: beaches, heritage, mountains, food or city life.
- Say whether you travel with grandparents or less mobile family, or with young children.
- Press the button and read the reasons under the suggestion.
How does the seasonal logic work?
Northern Vietnam has four seasons. Central and southern areas have two: a rainy season and a dry season1. The tool scores each region for your month and then adds points for your interests.
The rainy stretches it uses come from the climate facts we checked:
- North: the rainy season in the Red River Delta starts around April to May, peaks in July to August and ends in October to November2. The tool treats May to October as the wet months.
- Central coast: the rainy season starts around August to September and peaks in October to November3. Da Nang’s wet and typhoon season runs from September to December4. The tool treats September to December as the wet months and weighs them most heavily.
- South: the rainy season starts in May5. Ho Chi Minh City has a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season December to April6. The tool treats May to November as the wet months, and counts them less heavily because southern rain tends to come as short showers.
Vietnam is also affected by six to eight typhoons or tropical cyclones a year7, so a rainy-month suggestion is a prompt to keep a backup plan, not a ban.
How do I read the result?
The big line is the suggested region. Under it you will see reasons: how your month sits in that region’s season, whether your days suit one region or two, and a note for seniors or young children if you ticked them.
The second choice is the region to look at if your dates, your flights or your family cannot move. Interests matter: mountains favour the north, beaches favour the centre and south, and city life favours the south.
What if my month is wet everywhere?
Some months leave every region with some rain. Pick the region whose rain pattern suits your plans best, build in indoor options and keep boat or island days flexible. The weather by month guide and the regional weather table show the season detail.
What are the limits?
The tool knows seasons, not weather forecasts, flight times or prices. It does not know your arrival airport or what is open on your dates.
Read the north versus central guide for a closer comparison, check how your days fit with the travel-day checker, and visit the regions hub for place-by-place pages.
Common questions
Can I only choose one region?
The tool names one region and a second choice, because a short trip usually works best with one region and one flight in and out. If you have enough days, the result says so, and combining two regions with a domestic flight becomes realistic. A planner can help you shape that.
Why does the suggestion change when I pick a different month?
Each region has its own rainy and dry stretch, so a region that scores well in one month can score lower in another. The tool compares your month with those stretches first, then adds points for your interests and companions.
What does it do for grandparents or toddlers?
It adds a note, not a new region. For grandparents or less mobile family the advice is one or two bases and no long road legs. For young children it favours a beach base with short transfers. Both notes appear under the result so you can discuss them with your group.
Is a rainy month a bad month?
Not always. Rain can mean short showers rather than all-day downpours. It does change what is practical, such as boat days or mountain views, so the tool flags it and suggests a backup plan rather than ruling the region out.
