Vietnam Weather by Month and Region

With a fixed travel month, find the region where the weather is most likely to work for you.

Match your fixed month to the region, not the other way round. At year-end, choose the north or south and keep the central coast flexible. In the middle of the year, the central coast is at its driest, while the north and south are in their rains.

What does each region’s weather look like?

Northern Vietnam has four seasons, while central and southern areas have two, a rainy season and a dry season1. That is why one month can feel completely different in three places.

Which windows come from the sources?

The facts behind the table:

  • Hanoi’s coolest month is January, at a mean of 16.4 C, and the hottest is July, at 29.2 C2.
  • In the Red River Delta, rain starts April or May, peaks July and August and ends October or November3.
  • On the central coast, rain starts August or September and peaks October and November4.
  • Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December, and its dry season as January to August5.
  • In the south, the rainy season starts in May6.
  • Ho Chi Minh City’s rainy season is roughly May to November, and its dry season December to April7.

Which region should you choose for your month?

  • December to February: north if you enjoy cool air, south for warm dry days. Central works once the wet season ends.
  • March to May: central is dry, and the south stays dry until its rains begin in May6.
  • June to August: central for beaches. Choose the north only if you accept heat and rain.
  • September to November: the north is easing, but central is at its most uncertain. Vietnam is affected by 6 to 8 typhoons or tropical cyclones a year8.

What if your month is fixed by Tet or school holidays?

Tet in 2027 falls on 6 February9. Check prices and closures around it. For a school-holiday window, use our route chooser to test options, and see the north vs south in your month page for the main two ends.

Common questions

Which region is best for a year-end trip?

The north and the far south are the more comfortable ends. The central coast is in its wet and typhoon season from September to December, so a beach plan there needs flexibility. The north turns cool, so pack layers, and the south is in or near its dry season.

Which region is best for mid-year school holidays?

The central coast is in its dry season until August, so Da Nang and Hoi An suit beach days. The north is hot and wet at its peak, and the south has begun its rains. Choose central for beaches and accept afternoon showers elsewhere.

Does the whole country share the same weather?

No. The north has four seasons, while the central and southern areas have two, a rainy and a dry season. The rainy windows also start and end at different times, which is why your month can point clearly to one region over another.

How worried should I be about typhoons?

Vietnam is affected by 6 to 8 typhoons or tropical cyclones a year, and most hit the coast in the wetter months. They are not a reason to cancel, but they are a reason to keep bookings flexible and to read forecasts in the days before you fly.
