Central Vietnam

Best Time for Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue

The central coast has a clear wet window, and a flexible booking can absorb it.

The central coast is best in its dry months, January to August for Da Nang. September to December is the wet and typhoon window, and October is the heaviest. You can still go in that window, but you need a flexible booking and a backup plan.

When is the central coast at its most reliable?

Da Nang lists its dry season as January to August and its wet and typhoon season as September to December1. For the wider coast, the rainy season starts August or September and peaks October and November2.

So the dry months give you the best chance of beach and old-town days. If your leave falls in the wet window, the trip is not ruined, but it needs a plan.

How heavy is the wet season?

October is Da Nang’s wettest month, at about 628 mm of rain3. Vietnam is also affected by 6 to 8 typhoons or tropical cyclones a year4. Storms can cancel flights, close beaches and change tours at short notice.

Expect days that are fine and days that are not. A beach holiday suffers most. A culture holiday in Hue and Hoi An suffers less, since much of it can move indoors.

How do you build flexibility into the booking?

  • Choose rooms with a free change or cancellation option.
  • Leave one spare day in the middle, not just at the end.
  • Avoid a tight connection on your last day.
  • Keep sights as a flexible block you can swap with indoor options.
  • Read the forecast a week before you fly, then again two days before.

Our typhoon and rainy-season trip plan goes through these steps with a rain-day checklist, and Central Vietnam in rainy months lists stops that still work.

What differs between Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue?

The three share the same rainy belt, so the window is broadly the same. Hoi An lies about 28 km south of Da Nang5. Hue has no direct international flights6, and Da Nang is 80 km south of Hue’s airport7, so you reach Hue by road.

The Imperial City in Hue lists 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM in summer and the dry season, and 7 AM to 5 PM in winter and the rainy season8. Check times before your visit. Read the guides for Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue for the places themselves.
