Private or Group Tour: What the Price Buys

Same route, two ways to travel: see what each price buys and where the gap narrows.

A private tour costs more per person for a couple, but the gap narrows as your party grows to four or more. A group tour is cheaper and fixed in its pace. Choose private when flexibility matters most, and group when price and meeting others matter most.

What is the same on both tours?

Use one itinerary for both. The same route, the same days and the same hotels, so the comparison is about the product and not about two different trips.

For example, a central Vietnam route with My Son, 68 km southwest of Da Nang city centre1, and the Hai Van Tunnel, which opened in 2005 and is 6.28 km long2, looks identical on paper. The difference is who decides when to leave and where to stop.

What does each price actually buy?

VehicleShared coach or vanYour own car or van
GuideShared with the groupYours for the day
PaceFixed by the scheduleSet by you
StopsFixed, may include shoppingChanged on request
MealsSet menusYou choose
DepartureFixed timeFlexible

A group tour spreads fixed costs across the whole group. A private tour spreads them across only your party. That single fact explains most of the price difference.

Where does the gap narrow?

The gap narrows as the party grows. A car for two is the same car for four. A guide for two is the same guide for four. Per person, the private price drops quickly as seats fill.

Our guide on private tour price by group size works through that with a worked example. If the changing quote confuses you, read why a private tour price per person changes.

Which traveller gains most from each?

  • Private: families with toddlers or elderly parents, halal meal needs, photographers and anyone who wants to leave early or late.
  • Group: budget couples and solo travellers who enjoy meeting others and are happy with a set schedule.

What should you ask before paying a deposit?

Ask the same questions of both kinds of tour.

  • Are entry tickets, meals and tips included?
  • What is the start time, and how many stops are shopping stops?
  • Which vehicle size is quoted, and does it change with party size?
  • What happens if weather forces a change?
  • What are the cancellation and refund terms?

For example, Hue Imperial City was listed at 200,000 VND for adults when we checked3. Confirm the current price before you go. If a quote does not say whether tickets are included, ask.

Check that the seller is a licensed agency. MOTAC’s homepage links to a travel agency check4. For a Vietnam-based operator, ask for the licence and match the payment name to the company.

What should you do next?

Put both quotes into the package inclusion comparator so you compare like with like. Then read what to include in a package enquiry so your questions are complete. For the wider topic, see Costs and package value.

Tell us your party size, dates and how much flexibility matters, and we can lay out both versions of the same route side by side.

Common questions

Is a private tour always much more expensive than a group tour?

For two travellers, yes, usually. The vehicle and guide are fixed costs shared between fewer people. As the party grows to four or six, the per-person gap narrows because the same vehicle and guide serve everyone. Ask for quotes at your actual party size.

What do I give up on a group tour?

You give up control of the pace, the stops and the departure time. A group tour moves with the slowest and the most demanding member, and shopping stops can eat time. In return you pay less per person and meet other travellers.

What do I gain from a private tour?

You set the pace, change stops and leave when your family is ready. That matters most with toddlers, elderly parents or halal meal needs. It is a flexibility purchase, so decide whether you would use it before paying for it.

Are entrance fees and meals included in both?

Not automatically. Some quotes include entry tickets and some do not, and some include set meals while others leave lunch to you. Ask for a written list of inclusions for each. Our package comparator turns that list into a checklist.

How do I check a tour operator is real?

Ask for the company's licensed travel agency details and check them. MOTAC's homepage links to a travel agency check for Malaysian operators. For a Vietnam operator, ask for the licence and a written itinerary, and confirm the payment account matches the company name.
