Region choice

North or Central Vietnam for Your First Trip

Short leave and one first trip: pick the region that gives you the most holiday per day.

For a first trip on short leave, central Vietnam is the easier pick. Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue sit close together, the beach is part of the plan and the transfers are short. Choose the north when you want cool air, limestone scenery and Hanoi’s old streets, and can spare time for the road legs.

Which region suits which traveller?

Match the region to your situation first, then look at the detail.

  • Short leave: central. Fewer transfers means more holiday per day.
  • Toddlers or grandparents: central. One beach base, short outings and a rest after lunch.
  • Beach and relaxed meals: central.
  • Cool weather, photography and old streets: north.
  • Culture and history on foot: north, with Hanoi as your base.

How do the two regions compare?

Both regions have direct flights from Kuala Lumpur. Hanoi is listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air9, and Da Nang with the same four10. Check current schedules on the airline sites.

Does the weather change the answer?

Northern Vietnam has four seasons, while the centre and south have two4. Packing differs because of it.

Hanoi’s coolest month is January, at a mean of 16.4 C5. That feels cold if you are used to Malaysia.

The rainy windows differ too. In the Red River Delta, rain starts in April or May and ends in October or November6. On the central coast, rain starts in August or September and peaks in October and November7. Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December8.

A year-end trip is therefore easier to defend in the north. A mid-year beach holiday is easier in the centre. Our weather by month guide shows each month side by side.

How much transfer effort does each region need?

Central keeps it light. Hoi An lies about 28 km south of Da Nang11. The Hai Van Pass is a 21 km mountain road between Da Nang and Hue12, so treat Hue as a half-day move.

One catch: Hue’s airport has no direct international routes13. You fly into Da Nang and go by road.

The north asks for more. Sa Pa is about 300 km north-west of Hanoi14, so plan most of a day for that transfer. Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh are shorter, but still need a full day each. See Ninh Binh vs Ha Long Bay before you commit.

What should you check before you decide?

  • Your leave days, counting the arrival and departure days as half days.
  • Your travel month, against the rainy windows above.
  • Who is coming: toddlers and grandparents point to central.
  • Your departure airport: Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Johor Bahru each list only Ho Chi Minh City as a direct Vietnam route123.

Then try the north, central or south route chooser. For a ready central plan, see Da Nang, Hoi An and Ba Na Hills in 4D3N. For the northern side, read the North Vietnam travel guide and the Central Vietnam travel guide. More region advice lives in Regions and where to go.

Common questions

Which is easier for a first trip, north or central Vietnam?

Central is easier if your leave is short. Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue sit close together, a beach is part of the plan and there are fewer long road legs. The north suits you better if you want cool air, limestone scenery and Hanoi's old streets and can spare a day for each transfer.

Which region is better with toddlers or grandparents?

Central usually asks less of the group. You can base yourselves in one beach city, take short outings and rest in the afternoon. In the north, popular day trips mean longer road legs and more early starts, which tire small children and older relatives. Choose the north only if you can slow the plan down.

Can I do both regions on one short trip?

You can, but it eats leave. Moving between Hanoi and Da Nang needs a flight, plus airport time on both sides, so a short trip loses most of a day. If you have a week or less, pick one region and see it well. Save the other for a return visit.

Which region is better for Muslim families?

Neither region is simple, so plan meals before you fly. In Hanoi, Al-Noor Mosque gives you an anchor for finding Muslim-owned places nearby. In central Vietnam, check each meal stop in advance. In both, look for a displayed halal certificate, ask who issued it and ask about the kitchen.

Does the travel month change the choice?

Yes, it can decide it. The two regions have different rainy windows, and the north turns cold in winter while the centre stays warm. Check your month in the weather guide before you book flights, because swapping region is easier than swapping the weather.
