North Vietnam Travel Guide for Malaysians

The north packs a capital, limestone scenery, cool mountains and bays into one compact route.

North Vietnam suits travellers who like culture, food and scenery more than beaches. It combines Hanoi, a limestone landscape at Ninh Binh, the bays near Ha Long and the high hills around Sa Pa. You can see a lot in a week, but only if you pick fewer bases.

What does the north offer?

Think of the north as four kinds of experience, and choose by taste, not by map.

  • City: Hanoi is the capital, with lakes, old lanes, markets and a long street-food list.
  • Karst: Ninh Binh has river caves, rice fields and limestone peaks.
  • Bays: Ha Long Bay was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 19941. Cat Ba and Lan Ha offer a quieter way in.
  • Mountains: Sa Pa is about 300 km northwest of Hanoi2 and suits trekkers and cool-air seekers.

Hanoi’s Thang Long citadel joined the list of UNESCO (the United Nations culture agency) in 20103, so the city itself has real depth.

Who does the north suit?

First-timers who love food and history will enjoy it, and so will photographers and culture seekers. Seniors can enjoy it with careful pacing, as our north Vietnam for seniors guide explains. It suits less well anyone who wants a sea beach.

When should you go?

The north has four seasons, while the centre and south have two4. Hanoi’s coolest month is January at a mean of 16.4 C5, which feels cold if you are used to Malaysia. Sa Pa is colder still, with a January mean of 8.7 C6.

In the Red River Delta the rainy season starts around April to May and peaks July to August7. Plan indoor backups in those months, and use the weather by month guide to pick your dates.

How do you get there from Malaysia?

Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi is listed as served by AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air8. Penang International lists only Ho Chi Minh City as its Vietnam destination9, so plan a connection if you fly from Penang.

Malaysians can enter without a visa for 30 days10. Rules change, so confirm on official sources before you book.

How much can you fit in?

Road legs in the north are slow and the stops are spread out. Pick Hanoi plus one or two bases rather than racing across the map. Our first-timer stops guide ranks which stops reward the time.

The Hanoi to Lao Cai railway is 296 km11, and it is the usual way to reach the Sa Pa side. Allow a full day each way when you plan it.

What about families and Muslim travellers?

Families with toddlers do best with fewer hotel changes and calmer streets. Pick a hotel with a lift and a quiet room.

Al-Noor Mosque on Hang Luoc Street in Hanoi was built between 1885 and 189012. Confirm prayer times with the mosque. Our north Vietnam halal guide covers meals, and never assume a restaurant is halal.

When is another region a better choice?

If a sea beach is the heart of your trip, look at the central coast or the south. For regional comparisons, browse Regions and where to go.

Common questions

Is North Vietnam a good choice for a first trip?

Yes, if you enjoy culture, food and scenery over beaches. Hanoi gives you a rich city, and Ninh Binh and the bays give you landscape within reach of it. If a sea beach is the point of your trip, the central or southern coast fits better.

How many days do you need in North Vietnam?

Five to seven days covers Hanoi, one limestone stop and one bay or mountain stop without rushing. With only three or four days, keep to Hanoi plus one nearby stop. Long road legs eat leave, so fewer bases is kinder.

What is the weather like in North Vietnam?

The north has four seasons, so it is cooler and more changeable than Malaysia. Winter can feel cold, summer is hot and wet, and mountain areas are colder still. Pack layers, and keep a rain plan for the wetter months, which our weather guide lays out by month.

Can Muslim travellers manage in North Vietnam?

Yes, with planning. Hanoi has Al-Noor Mosque as a useful anchor, but halal food is thinner once you leave the capital. Carry a few safe snacks, ask about kitchens and suppliers, and see our Muslim travellers guide for the north before you fix the route.

Do Malaysians need a visa for North Vietnam?

Malaysian ordinary passport holders can enter without a visa for 30 days, but rules change. Confirm the current rules on official Vietnamese sources before you book, and check your passport validity too. Our entry rules guide shows where to look.
