North Vietnam

Which Northern Stops Make a First Trip Worthwhile

Some northern stops repay the travel and some only use up your days: here is how to tell.

For a first northern trip, keep Hanoi, add one limestone landscape and be honest about the rest. Hanoi gives the most reward for the least effort. Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay each repay a full day. Mountain stops such as Sa Pa cost far more days than they look.

How do the northern stops compare on effort and reward?

Reward is what you get for the time. Effort is the days of transfers and early starts it costs.

Why is Hanoi the first stop?

Hanoi is easy to reach. Noi Bai airport is about 35 km north-east of downtown6, and the city rewards slow walking.

The Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long was inscribed in 20101. Give the city at least two nights, and add day trips only when you are rested.

Is Ninh Binh worth it?

Yes. The Trang An Landscape Complex was inscribed on 23 June 20142. It gives you river, limestone and temples in one day.

It fits a day trip from Hanoi, or one night if you want a slower pace. See Ninh Binh: what to expect.

Is Ha Long Bay worth it?

Ha Long Bay was inscribed in 19943, and it is the image most people carry of northern Vietnam. It asks for a long day or an overnight stay, and weather can change what you see.

If time is short, choose between Ha Long and Ninh Binh with Ninh Binh vs Ha Long Bay. Detail on the bay is in Ha Long Bay for Malaysians.

Is Sa Pa worth it on a first trip?

Sa Pa is about 300 km north-west of Hanoi4, and the Hanoi to Lao Cai railway is 296 km5. Plan most of a day each way.

That cost is fine on a longer trip. On a short one, it takes the days that make the rest of the plan relaxed. Read Sapa town before you decide.

How do you put the stops together?

  • Short break: Hanoi plus one day trip.
  • A little longer: Hanoi, Ninh Binh and one night in Ha Long Bay.
  • With spare nights: add Sa Pa as a separate leg, not a day trip.

Check Short breaks near Hanoi for easy options. Use the North Vietnam guide for the whole region, and Regions and where to go to compare it with the centre and south.

Common questions

Which northern stops should a first-timer keep?

Keep Hanoi, then add Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay, not both unless you have time. Hanoi gives the most for the least effort. Ninh Binh and Ha Long each ask for a day but deliver the landscape most visitors come for. Add Sa Pa only when your leave can carry the transfer.

What can I drop without regret?

Drop the stops that cost a full day and add little to what you already have. For a short first trip, that is usually Sa Pa and anything that needs an overnight train or a long road leg. They are worth seeing later, on a trip that has the days for them.

How long should I give the north on a first trip?

Give it enough days that you never move on the same day you land or fly home. A route of Hanoi plus one landscape day trip fits a short break. Adding a second landscape or a mountain stop needs more nights, not a faster pace.

Is Sa Pa worth it on a first trip?

Only if you want mountain scenery and cool air and can accept a long transfer each way. If your leave is short, choose a limestone landscape closer to Hanoi, and save Sa Pa for a trip with more nights.
