Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay: Which to Pick

Two limestone landscapes, one short trip: choose the one that fits your time and the weather.

If time is short, pick Ninh Binh for a gentle, land-and-river day, and Ha Long Bay for open sea views and a boat day. Choose Ninh Binh with young children or elders, or when the weather looks unsettled. Choose Ha Long Bay when the classic bay is the picture you came for.

Which should each traveller pick?

  • First trip, short leave: Ninh Binh, for less transfer effort.
  • Photographers: Ha Long Bay for vistas, Ninh Binh for texture.
  • Young children or grandparents: Ninh Binh.
  • Classic postcard view: Ha Long Bay.
  • Rain or storm worries: Ninh Binh.

The Trang An Landscape Complex was inscribed on 23 June 20141. Ha Long Bay was inscribed in 19942.

What is the transfer effort like?

Both are day outings from Hanoi, but each asks for most of a day. Neither is a short hop.

Ninh Binh can be a day trip or a one-night stay. Ha Long Bay works better with an overnight, if you want the cruise to feel unhurried. See Short breaks near Hanoi for how they sit in a plan, and Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay for each place.

How does weather change the choice?

In the Red River Delta, the rainy season starts April to May and ends October to November3. Rain is a lesser problem in Ninh Binh, where most plans still work in a drizzle.

For a bay trip, storms matter more. Vietnam is affected by six to eight typhoons or tropical cyclones a year4. If your dates fall in a stormy window, choose Ninh Binh, or accept a flexible plan.

Hanoi’s coolest month is January, at a mean of 16.4 C5. Cool, hazy mornings affect both places, so pack a layer.

What if you want a quieter bay?

Lan Ha Bay sits beside Ha Long and is quieter. See Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island or Lan Ha Bay for how to base yourself.

What should you check before you decide?

  • Your days: both need most of a day each way.
  • Your month and the rainy window above.
  • Who is coming: boats and steps matter for elders and toddlers.
  • Whether you prefer land-and-river or sea.

Common questions

Can I see both Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay on a short trip?

You can, but each needs most of a day and they lie in different directions from Hanoi. On a short break you spend more time in transit than looking at scenery. Choose one for a short trip and keep the other for a return visit.

Which is better for photographers?

Ha Long Bay gives wide sea-and-rock scenes, especially in soft light and clear weather. Ninh Binh gives river, rice field and limestone in layers, with more foreground. Both reward early or late light. Pick the bay for open vistas and Ninh Binh for texture and detail.

Which is easier with young children or grandparents?

Ninh Binh is gentler. Most of the experience is a boat ride on calm water and short walks. Ha Long Bay needs longer transfers, boarding a boat and sometimes steps. If you choose the bay, take a day cruise rather than an overnight stay.

Which is riskier in bad weather?

The bay. Vietnam is affected by six to eight typhoons or tropical cyclones a year, and boats may be cancelled or routes shortened when storms approach. Ninh Binh suffers less, because much of it works in light rain. Always keep a slack day.
