Lan Ha Bay: The Quieter Bay Beside Ha Long
Same limestone scenery as Ha Long, with more water to yourself if you plan the base well.
Lan Ha Bay offers the same limestone scenery as Ha Long, with calmer water and fewer large boats. It suits travellers who can spend a night near Cat Ba Island and care more about quiet than convenience. If you have one short day, Ha Long is simpler.
What is Lan Ha Bay and where is it?
Lan Ha Bay lies beside Cat Ba Island on Vietnam’s north-east coast, south-east of the main Ha Long cruise area. Its limestone islets look much like those in Ha Long.
UNESCO’s listing for Ha Long Bay was extended in 2000 and 2023, and now carries the name Ha Long Bay-Cat Ba Archipelago1. That shows how closely the two areas belong together. For the original bay, read our Ha Long Bay guide.
What does Lan Ha offer that Ha Long does not?
The main difference is space. Fewer large cruise boats share the water, so mornings and late afternoons feel calmer. Small beaches and quiet coves make swimming and kayaking easier to enjoy.
Ha Long still has more cruise choices and more first-timer support. Lan Ha rewards a slower plan and an extra night.
Who enjoys Lan Ha most?
Slow couples enjoy it for the quiet. Photographers like the soft light on still water. First-timers who can spare a night will be happy too.
It suits travellers in a rush less well. For a direct comparison of bases, read Cat Ba or Lan Ha Bay.
How do you reach it?
Fly to Hanoi first. Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi is listed as served by AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air2. Cat Bi airport in Haiphong lists no Malaysian airlines3, so a Hanoi arrival is the practical route.
From Hanoi, go by road towards Haiphong, then cross by boat to Cat Ba Island. Plan most of a day for the whole transfer. Ask any cruise company whether the transfer is included.
When should you go?
In the Red River Delta, the rainy season starts around April to May, peaks in July and August and ends in October or November4. Vietnam is affected by 6 to 8 typhoons or tropical cyclones a year5.
Boats can be cancelled in rough weather. Keep one spare day, and read Vietnam weather by month before picking dates.
Where should you base yourself?
Choose a Hanoi pick-up for simplicity, or sleep on Cat Ba Island for earlier starts and a calmer first morning. A night on Cat Ba suits slow couples and photographers best.
What about families, seniors and Muslim travellers?
With toddlers and seniors, choose short transfers, gentle stairs and optional activities. Ask about life jackets in the right sizes and the nearest clinic.
For Muslim travellers, send meal needs in writing before you pay. Our meal and prayer checks list what to ask.
When is another place a better choice?
If you have one day and want the simplest plan, a Ha Long day cruise is easier. If you prefer river rowing over sea, look at Ninh Binh. Browse more in Attractions and culture, and price your plan with the trip budget builder.

Common questions
What is the difference between Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay?
Lan Ha sits south-east of the main Ha Long cruise area, beside Cat Ba Island. The limestone scenery looks similar, but fewer large boats anchor here and the water feels calmer. Ha Long has more cruise choices and a stronger first-timer reputation. Lan Ha rewards slower plans and an extra night.
How do I reach Lan Ha Bay from Hanoi?
You travel by road towards Haiphong, then cross by boat or ferry to Cat Ba Island, where most Lan Ha trips start. Plan most of a day for the whole transfer. Some cruise packages include the pick-up and transfers, so ask exactly what the price covers.
Is Lan Ha Bay good for a short trip?
It can be, but it rewards one night. A same-day trip from Hanoi spends most of the day on transfers and leaves little time on the water. If you have only two days of leave for the north, a Ha Long day cruise is the simpler option.
Is Lan Ha Bay suitable for seniors and toddlers?
It can be, with a calm itinerary. Kayaking and swimming are optional, and boats have stairs and narrow decks. Pick a boat with gentle stairs, short transfers and a clear plan for rough weather. Ask where the nearest clinic is when you book.
Can Muslim travellers eat well around Lan Ha?
Plan meals before you go. Cruises serve set menus and Cat Ba town has limited choice, so send your needs in writing and ask about pork, alcohol in cooking and kitchen practice. Pork-free is not the same as holding a halal certificate. Carry snacks as a backup.
