Vietnam With a Toddler: Transport, Strollers and Naps
Build the route around naps, car seats and short legs, and a toddler trip works.

A toddler trip works when the route is built around the child, not the other way round. Choose one base, keep transfers short and anchor each day to the nap. Ask about car seats and strollers before you book, and keep the first day empty.
What should you decide first?
Start with the child’s needs, then add sights.
- Naps: when and where they usually sleep.
- Car seat: whether you need one for every ride.
- Stroller: or a carrier, or both.
- Meals: simple, familiar food on hand.
- Base: one place with a pool or shade.
What about car seats?
Do not assume a car seat is provided. Taxis and ride-hailing cars may have none. Grab operates in Vietnam1, but ask whether a child seat is possible before you rely on a ride.
For a private vehicle, ask in advance whether a child seat is available, which type, and confirm in writing. If not, consider bringing a light travel seat. Take it on airport transfers and long road legs first.
Is a stroller practical?
On some routes. Hotel lobbies, malls and beach resorts suit one. Old-town lanes and pavements blocked by parked motorbikes do not.
Bring a light, foldable stroller and a carrier as backup. Our guide to crossing the road in Vietnam explains how to walk with a toddler near traffic. Hold your child’s hand or carry them, on the side away from the road.
How long can the legs be?
Short legs are best. Noi Bai airport is about 35 km north-east of downtown Hanoi2.
Nha Trang is 30 km from Cam Ranh airport3. Hoi An lies some 28 km south of Da Nang4.
Choose a base within a short ride of the airport and the sights. Plan the rest of any transfer day empty, and ask for the real driving time.
How do you build the day around naps?
Anchor the day to the nap.
- Morning outing while it is cooler.
- Back to the hotel for lunch and sleep.
- Quiet pool or beach time after the nap.
- Dinner early, with a short walk if energy remains.
A nap in a moving vehicle works for some children. Plan a proper rest as well. Keep one free day in the middle of the trip.
Which region suits a toddler?
A single beach base with short outings suits toddlers best. Central Vietnam, with Da Nang and Hoi An close together, fits.
Our north vs central guide compares the regions. Avoid early starts and long road legs.
What to pack and plan?
Pack a plug adaptor, because most Vietnamese sockets accept types A and C plugs5. Save the ambulance number, 1156.

Common questions
Can I take a toddler to Vietnam?
Yes, families do this regularly. Choose one region, keep transfers short and build the day around naps. Ask about car seats and strollers before you book, and keep the first day empty. A toddler trip works when the plan fits the child, not when the child is fitted to a long list of sights.
Will I find a car seat for my toddler?
Do not assume. Taxis and ride-hailing cars may have no child seat. Ask your planner or driver in advance whether one can be provided, and confirm in writing. If not, consider bringing a lightweight travel seat or booking a private vehicle where you can fit one.
Is a stroller practical in Vietnam?
On some routes, yes. Hotel lobbies, malls and resort areas suit one. Old-town lanes, uneven pavements and steps do not. A light, foldable stroller is the practical choice, with a carrier as backup. Plan stops around where the stroller can go.
How do I schedule naps around sightseeing?
Anchor the day to the nap. Do the outing in the morning, return to the hotel for lunch and sleep, and go out again in the late afternoon. A nap in a moving vehicle can work for some children, but plan a proper rest as well.
Which region suits a toddler best?
A single beach base with short outings, such as Da Nang with Hoi An nearby, usually suits toddlers better than a multi-city route. Choose a resort or hotel with a pool and shade. Avoid trips that need early starts and long road legs.
