Tour costs

Private Tour Price for Two, Four or Six

The vehicle and guide cost the same whoever rides, so party size does most of the pricing work.

A private tour has two kinds of cost: shared costs and per-person costs. The vehicle and guide are shared, so each extra traveller lowers everyone’s share. Tickets, meals and rooms are per person, so they do not fall. That one split explains almost every private quote you will see.

What is fixed and what rises with each person?

Sort the lines before you read any number.

  • Fixed for the party: the vehicle, the driver, the guide and fuel and tolls.
  • Per person: entry tickets, set meals, extra activities and tips.
  • Per room: hotel nights, which depend on how you share.

Only the first group gets cheaper per person as the party grows. Keep the lines apart when you compare quotes.

What does a worked example look like?

We do not invent prices. Use a unit instead. Say the vehicle, driver and guide for the day together equal 12 parts.

Party sizeShare of fixed cost per person
2 travellers6 parts each
4 travellers3 parts each
6 travellers2 parts each

Going from two to four halves the fixed share. Going from four to six cuts it by a third. The steps shrink as the party grows, so the first extra travellers save the most.

Now replace the parts with a real quote. Ask for the vehicle and guide cost for the day, divide by your party size, and add the per-person lines. That is your honest per-person price. The ringgit cost worksheet lays out the rows.

Why does a quote jump at some sizes?

Vehicles come in tiers. A car suits a couple or a small family. A van suits a larger party. A minibus suits the largest.

When your party crosses a tier, the vehicle cost steps up even though you added one person.

This is why you should ask for quotes at your expected size and at one size either side. If a party of five costs nearly as much as six, you may as well invite the sixth person.

How do rooms change the picture?

Room sharing changes the per-person total even when the tour is private. Two couples sharing two rooms pay differently from four friends in two twin rooms, and a solo traveller carries a single-room cost. Our guide on single supplements for solo travellers covers that case.

How should you read the quote in ringgit?

Vietnam’s currency is the dong, VND3. Bank Negara Malaysia’s page showed MYR 0.0158 per 100 VND on 15 October 20262. That rate moves, so ask whether the quote is fixed in ringgit or converted on the day.

Common questions

Why is a private tour so much cheaper per person for six than for two?

The vehicle and guide are fixed costs. Two people carry all of them, while six people split them three ways more. Costs that rise with each person, such as tickets and meals, do not shrink, so the saving applies only to the shared part of the price.

Does a larger group need a bigger vehicle, and does that raise the price?

Yes, there are vehicle tiers. A car suits a couple or a small family, a van suits a bigger party, and a minibus suits the largest. The price steps up at each tier, so a party just above a tier limit can feel the jump. Ask for quotes at each size.

Do tickets and meals go up with each person?

Yes. Entry tickets and set meals are per person, so they do not fall as the party grows. This is why the total per person falls but never to zero. Keep these lines separate from the vehicle and guide when you read a quote.

How do I read a quote in dong and in ringgit?

Vietnam's currency is the dong, ISO code VND. Ask for the quote in ringgit if you can, or in VND with a stated rate. Bank Negara's page showed MYR 0.0158 per 100 VND on 15 October 2026, and the rate changes.

Can I ask for a quote at two party sizes?

Yes, and you should. Ask for the same itinerary at the party size you expect and one size above and below. That shows you where the price steps and how firm the group needs to be before you pay a deposit.
