Vietnam Cost Worksheet in RM

Turn dong prices on menus and tickets into ringgit you can feel.

Check today’s rate with your bank or money changer and enter it here.

The cost worksheet converts dong prices into RM, one line at a time, using an exchange rate you enter yourself. Use it at home while planning, or on the trip beside a menu, a ticket price or a market quote.

What does this tool help you decide?

Vietnamese prices run into tens and hundreds of thousands, which makes it hard to feel what something costs. The worksheet turns each figure into RM so you can judge a meal, a taxi ride or an entrance ticket before you agree to it.

It also adds up a list, which helps when you are pricing a day out or comparing two quotes written in dong.

How do I use it, step by step?

  1. Find today’s rate with your bank or money changer.
  2. Enter the rate as the number of RM for one hundred thousand dong.
  3. Type an item name, such as a bowl of pho, and its price in dong.
  4. Add more lines with the add button.
  5. Press the button to see each line in RM and the total.

What rate do I enter?

Enter the rate from your own bank or money changer on the day. The sheet does not carry a live rate, so it can never show you an old one.

For a sense of scale, Bank Negara Malaysia’s exchange rate page showed 0.0158 Malaysian ringgit (MYR) per 100 Vietnamese dong (VND) on 15 October 20261. Multiply that by one thousand to get the rate for one hundred thousand dong. Rates move, and the rate you receive at a counter differs from a reference rate, so use the rate you will really get.

How do I make sense of dong amounts?

Vietnam’s currency is the dong, with the code VND2. Banknotes in frequent use are 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 100,000, 200,000 and 500,000 dong3.

With so many zeros, read the number on each note before you hand it over. The worksheet helps you check a price before you pay, not after.

What do I enter if I do not know the price yet?

Leave the line out, or type the price you were quoted and mark the item name with a question mark. Then check the trip cost guide to see what each line should cover, and put the converted total into the budget builder for the whole trip.

For a package quote written in RM, the package comparator is the better tool.

Where should I exchange money?

Vietnam Airlines advises exchanging for dong at the airport, local banks or authorised exchange counters4. Compare the rate at each counter with the rate you entered here, because the gap between them is a real cost.

What are the limits?

The sheet multiplies and adds. It does not know fees, card charges or the margin a money changer applies. Keep a little extra in your budget for those. The planning tools hub lists the other worksheets.

Common questions

Why do I have to type the exchange rate myself?

Because rates change daily and a rate printed on a page would be out of date within days. Entering your own rate from your bank or money changer means every line is converted at a rate you can actually get, which is more honest than a fixed number.

Which rate should I use, the bank rate or the counter rate?

Use the rate you will really receive when you exchange or pay by card. A reference rate is useful for a first feel, but counters and cards add a margin. Entering your real rate gives a more reliable RM figure for each price you convert.

How do I convert a price quickly in my head?

Take the rate for one hundred thousand dong and divide the price by one hundred thousand. For example, a price of fifty thousand dong is half the rate. The worksheet does this exactly for each line, so use it when the amount matters.

Can I use it for prices on a menu or a tour quote?

Yes. Type the dish or tour name and its dong price on each line. The sheet shows each in RM and the total. For a larger tour quote with several inclusions, the package inclusion comparator helps you check what is covered before you pay.
