Planning Around Rain and Typhoons in Vietnam
If a storm worries you on a first trip or with parents, build in room before booking.
Plan for rain by leaving room, not by avoiding Vietnam. Put a spare day before your flight home, choose the drier region for your month and ask each supplier what happens when weather changes the plan. That is enough to keep a storm week calm, even with parents or first-time nerves.
How common are typhoons?
Vietnam is affected by 6 to 8 typhoons or tropical cyclones a year1. They do not hit everywhere at once, and timing differs by region. The central coast is the one to watch.
On the North Central and South Central coast, the rainy season starts around August or September and peaks in October and November3. Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December2. In the Red River Delta around Hanoi, rain starts around April or May and ends around October or November4.
Where do buffer days go?
Think of buffers as protection for the parts of the trip that cannot move.
- The day before your flight home: keep it free of tours and long road legs.
- After any boat or island day: do not book a fixed-time flight on the same day.
- Between two regions: leave a half day, since a delayed flight is the most common way a storm hits a plan.
- For seniors: add a rest half day in the middle, which doubles as a weather spare.
Use the itinerary travel-day checker to see which days in your plan are already heavy. A heavy day is where a delay hurts most.
How should you read the forecast?
Look close to the date. Storm tracks only become clear in the last days, so a forecast read weeks ahead says little. Use the national weather agency for Vietnam, your airline’s notices and a message from your hotel the day before each move.
If a storm is named and heading your way, decide early. Moving a day costs less than being stuck.
What should you ask hotels and tour suppliers?
Put these in writing before you pay.
- If a tour or boat trip is cancelled for weather, is it refunded, rebooked or credited?
- Who decides, and by when on the day?
- Can the hotel move our dates if a flight is cancelled?
- What indoor alternatives do you offer for the same day?
- What does the package cover if we must add a night?
Our package enquiry checklist has the rest of the questions to ask. For central Vietnam specifically, see which stops still work in rainy months and the rain and storm months for Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue. The seasons topic page links the rest of the timing guides.

Common questions
Should I avoid Vietnam during typhoon season?
Not necessarily. Storms affect some coasts in some weeks, not the whole country at once. If your dates fall in a wet window, choose a region on its drier side, keep the plan flexible and avoid fixed, non-refundable bookings on exposed coasts.
What number of spare days should I build in?
Keep one free day before your flight home, and avoid putting a tight connection on the last day. For a trip with older parents, two free half days spread through the week give them real rest and also absorb a weather delay.
Where should I check the forecast?
Read the national weather agency's forecast for your region, then check your airline's notices and your hotel's message the day before. Look at the forecast in the week before departure, not months ahead, because storm paths only become clear close to the date.
What does travel insurance have to do with it?
Policies treat weather delays differently, so read the wording on cancellation and delay before you buy. Check whether a named storm is already covered when you purchase, and keep receipts for any extra night or meal that a delay forces on you.
