Vietnam Weather by Region and Season
Rainy and dry seasons for each part of Vietnam, in one table.
Northern Vietnam has four seasons, while central and southern areas have two: a rainy season and a dry season1. The table below puts those seasons side by side for each region and for the places Malaysian travellers ask about most.
What are the seasons in each region?
| Place | Season facts from our fact bank |
|---|---|
| North (Red River Delta) | Rain starts around April to May, peaks around July to August and ends around October to November2. |
| Hanoi | A monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate3. July is the hottest month at 29.2°C on average and January the coolest at 16.4°C4. August and June are the wettest5. |
| Sapa | The coldest month is January at 8.7°C on average and the warmest is July at 19.9°C6. Most of its yearly rain falls from April to September7. Snowfall can occur8. |
| Central coast | Rain starts around August to September and peaks around October to November9. |
| Da Nang | The wet and typhoon season runs September to December and the dry season January to August10. October is the wettest month11. |
| South | The rainy season starts in May12. |
| Ho Chi Minh City | Rainy season roughly May to November, dry season December to April13. |
| Phu Quoc | Rainy season roughly April to November, dry season roughly December to March14. |
Vietnam is affected by six to eight typhoons or tropical cyclones a year15. They do not fall evenly across the country, so read the central coast row with extra care.
How do I use it when planning?
Start with your month, then read down the table to see which places are in their drier stretch. Short leave rewards a single region in its dry season over two regions in their wet one.
- Choosing a region: run your month through the route chooser for a first suggestion.
- Wet-season plans: keep boat days, island trips and mountain views flexible, and add indoor options.
- Seniors and young children: pick the drier region and a base with short transfers.
- Closer reading: the weather by month guide turns this table into month-by-month choices.
- Holiday timing: Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) in 2027 falls on 6 February16, so check how holidays affect travel on your dates.
How we built this table
Every row comes from the dated fact bank behind this site. Each fact records a claim, a source link and the date we checked it, and the marker after each sentence leads to that record in the facts list on this page. The climate facts here come from Wikipedia climate articles, which suit seasons and long-run averages.
We last checked these facts on 16 October 2026. Seasons change little from year to year, but a given year can run early or late, so use the table to choose a region and then check a forecast close to departure.
The refresh plan is simple. Facts that can change quickly are rechecked before each season. All others are rechecked every six months. Our editorial policy explains how corrections work, and the methodology page explains how we handle facts.
What the table does not tell you
It lists seasons, not daily forecasts. It also leaves out numbers we have not sourced, such as monthly rainfall for every place, so you will not find a month-by-month rainfall grid here. For flights to the region you choose, see the flights from Malaysia table.
If your dates fall in a wet stretch and you cannot move them, tell us your month and who is travelling and we will suggest a region and a rainy-day plan.
Common questions
Which region has the driest weather for my month?
Compare your month with the rainy stretches in the table: the north rains from about April to November, the central coast about August to December, and the south about May to November. The route chooser does this comparison for you and names a second choice as well.
Does a rainy season mean it rains all day?
Not necessarily. A rainy season is the part of the year when rain is more frequent or heavier. Plans still work if you keep indoor options and flexible boat or island days. Check a forecast close to departure, because the table shows seasons rather than daily weather.
Why is Sapa shown separately from Hanoi?
Sapa is in the mountains, so its temperatures and rain differ from Hanoi even though both are in the north. The table lists its own coldest and warmest months and mentions that snowfall can occur, which matters when packing and planning.
How often is this table updated?
Facts that can change quickly are rechecked before each season, and all others every six months. The table was last checked on 16 October 2026. If you spot something that looks wrong, message us on WhatsApp and we will check it against the source.
