South Vietnam for Muslim Travellers

Meals and prayer need planning in the south, and Chau Doc offers a real Muslim community.

South Vietnam can work well for Muslim travellers if you plan each meal and prayer stop before you go. Ho Chi Minh City has the strongest base, and Chau Doc offers a living Cham Muslim community. We do not name any business as halal, because you should verify each one.

Where do Muslims live in southern Vietnam?

Vietnam’s 2019 census counted 70,934 Muslims2. About 9% of them lived in Ho Chi Minh City in 19993. Two main Cham groups practise Islam: Bani Cham in Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan, and Sunni Cham in the Mekong Delta around Chau Doc, An Giang4.

What can anchor you in Ho Chi Minh City?

Saigon Central Mosque was completed in 19351. Use it as an anchor for finding Muslim-owned places nearby and for asking about prayer. See the Ho Chi Minh City guide for areas to base yourself.

What makes Chau Doc different?

Chau Doc is a ward in An Giang Province, and its western boundary borders Cambodia5. The Kahramanlar Rahmet Mosque in An Giang, described as Vietnam’s largest, opened in 2017 with Turkish funds6. Read Chau Doc and compare it with Can Tho in Can Tho or Chau Doc.

How do you check a meal?

  • Look for a displayed halal certificate and ask who issued it.
  • Ask whether the kitchen and suppliers are separate from pork.
  • Ask if alcohol is used in cooking.
  • Treat Muslim-owned, certified and pork-free as different things.
  • Keep a backup meal, such as fruit, packaged food or an airline-style snack.

Our meal and prayer arrangement checks set this out in full.

Common questions

Is South Vietnam easy for Muslim travellers?

It takes planning, not worry. Muslims are a small minority in Vietnam, so halal food is not everywhere. Ho Chi Minh City has more options than most places, and Chau Doc has a Cham Muslim community. Confirm each meal and prayer arrangement ahead of time.

How do I check whether a place is halal?

Ask to see a displayed halal certificate and find out who issued it. Ask about the kitchen, suppliers and whether pork or alcohol is used. Remember that Muslim-owned, certified and pork-free are three different claims.

Where can I pray?

Mosques anchor prayer access, and Saigon Central Mosque is the main one in Ho Chi Minh City. In the delta, Chau Doc has mosques. Elsewhere, ask your hotel for a quiet room and carry a prayer mat and qibla app.

Should I book a tour with halal meals?

Only if the operator can say exactly what is served and where it comes from. Ask for the meal plan in writing, including breakfast. A package that includes halal meals should tell you the arrangement, not just promise it.
