South Vietnam

South Vietnam Travel Guide for Malaysians

The south is hot, fast and friendly, so choose the stops that suit your energy.

South Vietnam is the warm, easy half of the country: a huge food city, a green river delta, a few beach towns and some of the best-known islands. Most Malaysians will find the heat and the tastes familiar. Pick two or three stops rather than all of them, and the trip stays relaxed.

What is South Vietnam like?

The south is flat, humid and busy. Central and southern areas have only two seasons, rainy and dry1. There are no cool months to plan around, so the main question is how much rain you can accept.

Ho Chi Minh City is the anchor. It had about 14 million people in 20253, and it moves quickly. Around it sit the Mekong Delta to the south-west, the coast at Vung Tau and, further out, the islands of Phu Quoc and Con Dao.

Who will enjoy the south most?

Food lovers, first-timers and families who want a warm holiday with little cold-weather packing will enjoy it. Our guide for food lovers shows where to base yourself for eating.

Families with toddlers or grandparents should keep the pace gentle. Read South Vietnam with kids and grandparents before you set the plan.

Which stops make up the south?

Think of four types of stop:

  • The city: Ho Chi Minh City for food, markets, museums and a long evening.
  • The delta: Mekong Delta for boats, canals, orchards and village life.
  • The coast: Vung Tau, a beach town built for a weekend from the city.
  • The islands: Phu Quoc for resorts, and Con Dao for quiet nature and history.

How long should you give it?

Three to four days covers the city and one delta day trip. Five or six days lets you add a delta overnight or a beach town. An island needs its own block of days.

On short leave, use our short trip guide to choose two stops and leave the rest.

When should you go?

Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season from December to April2. The dry months are easiest for sightseeing. In the rainy months, showers tend to arrive in the afternoon, so keep mornings for outdoor plans.

Heat is the real limit all year. Our heat and humidity guide explains how to pace each day.

How do you get there from Malaysia?

Ho Chi Minh City to Kuala Lumpur is listed as served by Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia4. Penang and Kota Kinabalu each list Ho Chi Minh City as their only Vietnam route56, so the south is the natural gateway from there.

Phu Quoc is listed with AirAsia and Sun PhuQuoc Airways flights to Kuala Lumpur7. Schedules change, so confirm with the airlines. For comparing arrival cities, read KL to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang.

How do you get around?

In Ho Chi Minh City, use Grab for most trips. Grab operates in Vietnam and first launched in Ho Chi Minh City in February 201410. For the delta, a private car with a driver or a small-group tour is the easiest way to avoid long waits.

Islands and the coast need a flight or a longer road leg. Plan most of a day for each transfer, and do not schedule a sight on arrival day.

What about Muslim travellers?

Saigon Central Mosque was completed in 19358, and it is a useful anchor in the city. A Sunni Cham community lives around Chau Doc in the delta9.

Never assume a restaurant is halal. Ask for the displayed certificate and who issued it. Our south Vietnam halal guide has the full checklist.

When is the north or centre a better choice?

If you want cool air, mountains or old towns, the north or centre fits better. Use the south or north first-trip guide or the route chooser to compare.

Common questions

Is South Vietnam a good choice for a first trip?

Yes, if you like food, markets and a warm climate that feels familiar. Ho Chi Minh City gives you the city, and the Mekong Delta adds a calm day on the water. Pair them for a short trip. If you want cool air and mountains, the north suits you better.

How long does South Vietnam need?

Give Ho Chi Minh City two to three days and add one night in the Mekong Delta. That is a comfortable first loop. Add a beach or island only if you have a few more days, because getting to the islands uses up at least half a day each way.

What is the easiest way to combine the south?

Base yourself in Ho Chi Minh City and take day trips to the delta. Each night you sleep in the same bed means fewer packing and transfer hours. If you want an island, fly to it once and stay put rather than hopping between places.

Can Muslim families eat well in the south?

It takes planning, and the city is easier than the countryside. Look for a halal certificate on display and ask who issued it, or choose a Muslim-owned place and ask about the kitchen. Pork-free is not the same as certified. Our south Vietnam halal guide lists the checks.

Is the south too hot for grandparents or toddlers?

It is warm all year, so plan around the heat. Do outdoor sights in the morning, rest indoors after lunch and carry water. Pick hotels with a pool or good air-conditioning. Our heat planning guide shows which stops stay comfortable when the sun is high.
