An overnight adds the things a day trip cannot: an early market, an unhurried afternoon and a cool evening on the water. You also skip the same-day return, which is the hardest part for toddlers and older relatives.

How does the season change things?
Ho Chi Minh City has a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season from December to April1. In the South, the rainy season starts in May2. Rain can arrive in the afternoon, so start early and keep the late hours flexible.

Yes, as a taste. You see boats, canals and orchards, and you are back in the city for dinner. Most of the day goes to the road, though, so you spend less time on the water. If that suits a short trip, a day out works. If not, stay a night.

Stay a night if you travel with children or older relatives, if you want a sunrise market, or if you dislike long same-day transfers. An overnight gives you a slower start, a rest in the afternoon and time on the water that is not squeezed between road legs.

Yes. A common shape is a day in Ho Chi Minh City, a delta night and a return, with a buffer before your flight. Do not schedule the return on the morning of an international flight.
