Mekong Delta

Ben Tre or My Tho for a Mekong Day Out

Two common delta day-trip towns, and a quick way to see which one fits your group.

Choose Ben Tre if you want a quieter, greener look at delta life and do not mind giving the day to it. Choose My Tho if you want a standard delta outing with minimal planning. Neither is wrong for a first trip.

What does each town show you?

Ben Tre is known as coconut country: orchards, small canals and village workshops. Read the Ben Tre guide for what a visit includes.

My Tho is the more familiar day-trip stop on the Mekong, with river views, fruit orchards and island stops. We have no separate page for it, so ask your operator exactly which stops are planned. The Mekong Delta guide explains the wider area.

How do you stop the day becoming a shopping trip?

Ask five things before you book:

  • Which stops are planned, and how long each lasts
  • How many people share the boat
  • Whether the tour includes shop visits, and whether you can skip them
  • What the meal plan is, including halal needs
  • Where the pick-up and drop-off are in Ho Chi Minh City

When is the best time to go?

Ho Chi Minh City has a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season from December to April1. In the South the rainy season starts in May2. A morning departure helps in any month.

What if you want more than a day?

If the delta draws you in, step up to an overnight. Our day trip or overnight guide explains the trade-off, and Can Tho or Chau Doc helps you pick a town.

For families, see South Vietnam with kids and grandparents. On a very short leave, read which two stops to pick. More region choices are in Regions and where to go.

Tell us who is coming and how much walking and boat time suits them, and we can say whether Ben Tre or My Tho fits your delta day better.

Common questions

Is Ben Tre quieter than My Tho?

Ben Tre is usually the calmer choice, with coconut groves and small canals. My Tho is the more established day-trip stop, so it can feel busier. Group size and timing matter more than the town, so ask your operator how many boats leave at the same hour.

Which is better for a first-timer with limited time?

My Tho is the simpler option if you want a standard delta outing with minimal planning. Ben Tre rewards travellers who prefer a slower look at village life and are happy to give it a little more of the day. Choose by the pace you want.

Can older relatives manage either place?

Yes, with care. Boat steps, uneven jetties and walking between stops are the main hurdles. Ask for smaller groups, shaded rest stops and a driver who waits close by. Skip optional activities that need balance.
