South or North Vietnam for a First Trip
Warm and easy, or cool and scenic: choose by pace, food and the days you can spare.
For a first trip on short leave, the south is the easier pick. Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta give you food, energy and a river day without long transfers. Choose the north when you want cool air, limestone scenery and Hanoi’s old streets, and you can spare time for road legs.
Which region suits which traveller?
- Short leave: south. A single base covers a lot.
- Warm weather and a relaxed pace: south.
- Cool air, mountains and photography: north.
- Culture on foot: either, with Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City as the base.
- Toddlers and grandparents: south, if you plan around the midday heat.
How do the two compare?
| Question | South (Ho Chi Minh City base) | North (Hanoi base) |
|---|---|---|
| Pace | Fast city, slow river days | Compact old city, then day trips |
| Scenery | Rivers, canals, markets | Limestone peaks, lakes, mountains |
| Food style | Sweeter, herb-heavy, river fare | Lighter, broth-led |
| Transfer effort | Short outings from one base | Longer road legs to bays and mountains |
| Climate feel | Warm all year, two seasons | Four seasons, cool winters |
What does the weather mean for your choice?
Northern Vietnam has four seasons, while the centre and south have two1. Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season from December to April2.
Hanoi’s coolest month is January, at a mean of 16.4 C3. That feels cold if you are used to Malaysia. A December or January trip suits the south better if you want warmth. Check every month in the weather by month guide.
How do you get there from Malaysia?
Both cities have direct flights from Kuala Lumpur. Ho Chi Minh City is listed with Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia4. Hanoi is listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air5.
If you fly from Penang, note that the airport lists only Ho Chi Minh City as a direct Vietnam destination6. That makes the south the simpler start from there.
How much road time should you expect?
The south keeps outings short, but plan most of a day for any delta trip. The north asks for more. Sa Pa is about 300 km northwest of Hanoi7, so give it its own transfer day.
What should you decide first?
Check three things: your leave days, your month and your departure airport. Then try the route chooser. If it is a close call between the two big cities, read Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
You can also compare the South Vietnam guide, the North Vietnam guide and, if central appeals, North vs Central Vietnam. More choices are in Regions and where to go.

Common questions
Which is easier for a first trip, south or north Vietnam?
The south is easier for short leave. Ho Chi Minh City is a good base, the Mekong Delta is a short outing away and the climate feels familiar. The north gives you cooler air and limestone scenery but asks for longer road legs. Choose the north if scenery matters more than ease.
Which has better food for a first-timer?
Both are strong, and neither is better. The south leans sweeter and herb-heavy, with river and market food. The north is lighter and more broth-based. Pick by the style you already enjoy, and see our food page before you commit.
Do I need to pack differently?
Yes. The south stays warm and humid, so pack light, breathable clothes and rain gear. The north has a cool season, and Hanoi's coolest month is January, so add a jacket for winter trips. Check your month in the weather guide.
