Over Hai Van Pass in One Day

One day, one mountain road, two stops and a lagoon at the end.

This is a one-day trip from Da Nang to Hue over Hai Van Pass, with a beach stop at Lang Co and a lagoon at Lap An in the afternoon. A private car with a driver is the easiest choice for most groups. A rental motorbike gives more freedom but asks more of the rider.

Who is this route for?

It suits photographers who want mountain, sea and lagoon in one frame, and friends who like the road as much as the stops. It also works for anyone moving from Da Nang to Hue and refusing to see the trip as dead time.

It is not a day for toddlers or a very hot afternoon. If you have little ones, read the easy-pace plan for families first.

The route at a glance

  • Morning: leave Da Nang after breakfast and climb the pass.
  • Midday: a viewpoint stop at the top, then a coffee.
  • Early afternoon: lunch and a walk at Lang Co.
  • Late afternoon: the Lap An lagoon in softer light.
  • Evening: arrive in Hue and rest.

How long is the road, and what does the tunnel change?

Hai Van Pass is an approximately 21 km mountain pass on National Route 1 between Hue and Da Nang1. The Hai Van Tunnel, opened in 2005, bypasses it and is 6.28 km long2.

So you have two ways across. The pass is the scenic one. The tunnel is the quick one, and it is the right call in rain or low cloud.

Day plan

Morning: Da Nang to the pass

Leave after breakfast, when the first mist is lifting. Climb slowly and ask the driver for one stop at the best viewpoint, then take your photographs without rushing. If the cloud is thick, drive on and try again on the way down.

The top gives a view over the bay. Have a coffee if a stall is open, and walk a little. Photographers can wait for the cloud to break rather than shoot through haze.

Midday: Lang Co

Lang Co is the coastal stop on the far side. It has a beach, a lagoon behind it and simple places to eat. Give it an hour or two, and keep it calm. This is your rest after the mountain.

Afternoon: Lap An lagoon

Lap An is a quiet lagoon on the coast, away from the main road. It suits late afternoon, when the light softens and the surface goes still. Ask your driver to confirm the road in and out before you commit, as small roads can be slow.

Evening: arrive in Hue

Hue became capital of unified Vietnam in 1802, and its monuments joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 19933. Check in and keep the evening empty. The Imperial City works better the next morning, which is why this route ends with a night in Hue.

Car or rental motorbike?

The two choices differ mainly in control and risk.

Skill neededNoneConfident, experienced rider
PaperworkAsk the operator for a clear quoteCheck licence and insurance first

Before choosing a motorbike, check whether your licence is accepted in Vietnam and whether your travel insurance covers riding. Use official sources for both, and read our guide on checking entry rules from official sources. If you are unsure, use a car.

What about weather and season?

The central coast rainy season starts around August to September and peaks in October to November5. In those months, check the forecast the evening before and be ready to take the tunnel. A wet pass is not a place to hurry.

Where does the day end?

Hue’s own airport has no direct international routes6, and Da Nang, the nearest international airport, is 80 km south of Phu Bai4. So if you fly home from Da Nang, build the return into your plan. Our guide to Hue as a day trip or overnight stop helps you decide how long to stay.

What should you book ahead?

  • A car and driver for the day, with the stops listed in a message.
  • A Hue room for the night, in the river side zone.
  • Luggage transfer, if you ride.

What will it cost?

Price the car or bike, fuel, meals and the Hue night in separate lines. Prices change by season, so enter today’s quotes in the trip budget builder. To see how this day sits inside a longer trip, read the Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue circuit or the Da Nang guide.

If you tell us your group size, your riding experience and your Hue night, we can suggest whether to use a car or a bike and where to place each stop.

Common questions

Can the pass, Lang Co and Lap An all fit in one day?

Yes, if you leave Da Nang after breakfast and treat the day as a slow drive with three stops, not a full tour. Skip any extra sights. If clouds sit on the pass, take photos at the lower stops and keep the lagoon for the end.

Is a rental motorbike a good idea on this road?

Only for an experienced rider who holds a licence accepted in Vietnam and has proper insurance. The road has bends, trucks and sudden rain. If any of that worries you, use a car with a driver, or an experienced local rider who takes your bags.

Should we use the pass or the tunnel?

Use the pass in clear weather, since the view is the point. Use the tunnel in rain, fog or when you are running late. The tunnel saves time, so you lose little by choosing it on a poor day.

What is the best time of year for the pass?

The dry months give clearer views. The central coast rainy season starts around August to September and peaks in October to November, when cloud and rain can hide the view. If the forecast is poor, keep the day flexible.

Where do we leave our bags on the way?

A private car carries all your luggage to Hue. On a motorbike you need a driver or a separate vehicle for the big bags, or you must travel light. Ask your Da Nang hotel to send bags to Hue by car, and confirm the price first.
