Da Nang Beach or Hoi An Old Town

You sleep in one bed a night, so pick the base that gives you the evenings you want.

Choose a Da Nang beach stay for a long city beach, modern comforts and an easy airport. Choose a Hoi An old-town stay for lantern-lit evenings you can walk through.

Couples who want slow nights lean to Hoi An. Families who plan around the sea lean to Da Nang. Either way, the other city is a half-day away.

How do the two bases compare?

Hoi An lies about 28 km south of Da Nang1, so you can see both from either base.

What does each base give you?

Da Nang’s My Khe Beach runs along the city, with hotels and restaurants behind it. The Marble Mountains, with a gateway to Huyen Khong Cave, are in the city2. Ba Na Hills is at 1,500 m elevation, 42 km from Da Nang3. Read the Da Nang city guide for the wider picture.

Hoi An Ancient Town was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 19994. It has a wooden Japanese bridge about 10 m long, built at the start of the 17th century5. My Son lies 36 km south of Hoi An6. See the Hoi An guide for more.

What does the other city cost you in transfers?

If you sleep in Da Nang, an evening in Hoi An means a ride there and a ride back. If you sleep in Hoi An, a day at the beach means a ride to the sand, unless you pick a beach-side stay such as An Bang Beach.

So decide where you want your evenings. Mornings and middays are easy to move.

When does the season change the answer?

Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December, and the dry season as January to August7. October is its wettest month at about 628 mm of rain8. In wet months a city base with indoor options is easier than a beach cottage. Check the weather guide before you book.

How do you decide?

  • Sea first, short leave, toddlers: Da Nang beach.
  • Slow evenings, photography, couples: Hoi An old town.
  • Mixed ages, unsure: Da Nang, with Hoi An as an evening outing.
  • Four nights or more: consider a split, using one base or split stay.

Compare each city’s zones in where to stay in Da Nang and where to stay in Hoi An. Add costs with the trip budget builder, and see more in Cities and where to stay.

Tell us your nights, your travel month and who is coming, and we can say whether the beach or the old town fits your trip.

Common questions

Should I stay in Da Nang or Hoi An for a first trip?

Stay in Da Nang if you want a long city beach, modern comforts and easy access to the airport. Stay in Hoi An if you want lantern-lit evenings and a walkable old town. Couples seeking slow evenings lean to Hoi An. Families with a sea-first plan lean to Da Nang.

Is it easy to see Hoi An from a Da Nang hotel?

Yes, as a day or evening trip. Hoi An lies about 28 km south of Da Nang, so plan the ride and the return. Late-night returns are easy with a booked car. The trade is that you lose your evenings in the old town to a ride back.

Can I swim at Hoi An old town?

Not in the old town itself. The sea is a short ride away at the beaches nearby. If sea time matters every day, Da Nang's beachfront is simpler. If you can accept a ride to the beach, Hoi An still works.

Which base is better with grandparents?

It depends on stairs and heat. Da Nang hotels are usually larger, with lifts and pools. Hoi An's old town is flat to walk but warm and crowded. Our seniors guide for the two cities covers lift access, quiet and short transfers.

Do I need to split nights between both?

On a short trip, one base is simpler. On four nights or more, a split can work, with a transfer day between. We cover this in the shared versus split stay guide. Choose one base first, and add the second city as a day trip.
