Hoi An stays

Hoi An Beach Stay or Old Town Stay

You want the sea and the lanterns both: decide which one you wake up next to.

Choose the beach if you want sea, space and quiet nights, and the old town if you want to step out into lanterns. You do not have to give up either. Sleep in the one you will use most, and visit the other once or twice.

What does a beachside stay feel like?

You wake up near the sea. Mornings are slow, with breakfast by the pool and a walk on the sand. The An Bang Beach area is the classic choice, with small cafes and sunbeds.

Hoi An lies about 28 km from Da Nang2, and the beach sits between the old town and the open sea. That means the old town is a short ride, not a day trip. Ask your hotel about a regular shuttle, since a daily taxi adds up.

What does an old town stay feel like?

You live inside the postcard. Hoi An Ancient Town has been on the World Heritage List since 19991, and sleeping inside means early walks before the crowds and a quick return for a rest.

The cost is noise and a small room. Evenings are lively, and main-street rooms can be loud. Our guide on Hoi An Old Town crowds and noise explains how to choose a quieter lane.

Which suits which traveller?

  • Couples wanting calm: the beach, with one or two nights in town.
  • Couples wanting atmosphere: the old town, with an afternoon at the sea.
  • Families with young children: the beach, because a pool is close and traffic is lighter. See stay areas for families.
  • Photographers: the old town for early light, plus a beach sunrise on another day.

Does the season change the choice?

Yes. Da Nang’s wet and typhoon season runs from September to December3. In those months, beach days may be cancelled, so an old town stay with indoor cafes and shops can be the safer choice. Outside them, the beach adds more.

If the sea is rough, Cham Islands boat trips may also be affected. Check with your operator.

Common questions

Can I enjoy both the beach and the old town in one stay?

Yes. Choose one as your bed and the other as your outing. A beachside hotel with a short ride into town works well, as does an old town stay with an afternoon trip to the sea. Pick based on where you want to wake up.

Which is better for a couple wanting a quiet holiday?

A beachside hotel suits couples who want quiet. You get sea air, space and calm evenings, then ride in for dinner. An old town stay suits couples who love atmosphere and are happy to hear the town after dark.

Is the beach near Hoi An good for swimming year-round?

Not always. Sea conditions change with the season, and Da Nang's wet and typhoon months run September to December. In those months, check the weather before planning beach days, and use the hotel pool as your calm option.

How do we get between the beach and the old town?

By a short ride on a hotel shuttle, a taxi, a ride-hailing app or a bicycle if the weather is dry and you are comfortable cycling. Ask your hotel what it provides, and agree on return times if you visit in the evening.
