Da Nang and Hoi An Stays With Children

Small children change what a good hotel area means: sand, a pool and an easy dinner come first.

For most families with young children, a beach-side hotel with a pool is the easiest base. Da Nang’s coast gives you sand, wide pavements and simple meals. Hoi An is best kept for one or two evenings, or for a quiet stay on its beach side.

Which stay areas suit children best?

Think about what a normal afternoon looks like. You want sand, a pool and a place to eat within a few minutes.

Is the Da Nang beach strip the easy choice?

Yes, for most young families. The beach is across the road and hotels usually have a pool, a kids’ menu and a breakfast that works for fussy eaters. Late afternoon swims and an early dinner fit a toddler’s day.

Da Nang’s wet and typhoon season runs from September to December3. In those months, pick a hotel with a good pool and indoor space, because beach days may be cancelled. Our Da Nang stay guide goes through the beach front against the city in more detail.

Can we stay in Hoi An with a toddler?

You can, if you choose the right part. Hoi An lies about 28 km from Da Nang1, so it is a short ride rather than a day trip. A hotel on the quiet edge, with a pool and a bicycle for older children, makes a calm base.

The old town is wonderful but packed with scooters and lantern crowds after dark. If you stay inside it, go out at sunset, eat early and head back before children are overtired. Where to stay in Hoi An compares the three zones.

What about safety around the water?

Children should not be in the sea without an adult within arm’s reach. Check the flag and lifeguard signs each day, and use the pool when the waves are strong. Hotel pools can lack a shallow section, so ask before you book if your child cannot swim.

How do meals work with children?

Rice, noodles, grilled chicken and fruit are easy to find in both cities. Beach-strip restaurants are used to families and serve quickly. In the old town, queues build at dinner, so book or go early. If your family eats halal, read our halal food and stay areas guide.

What is the simplest plan?

Fly to Da Nang, which lists direct flights from Kuala Lumpur with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air2. Stay on the Da Nang beach for most nights, then spend one evening in Hoi An. If you have more days, add a night at the Hoi An edge.

Common questions

Is Da Nang or Hoi An easier with young children?

Da Nang's beach strip is easier for the first few days. Pavements are wider, hotels have pools and restaurants sit close to the sand. Hoi An is lovely in the evening but its lanes are narrow and busy with bikes. Some families stay on the beach and visit the old town for one evening.

Do we need a hotel with a pool as well as beach access?

A pool is worth having. Waves can be strong at certain times, and a toddler may only want to splash for an hour. A pool gives you a calm option when the sea is rough, the sun is high or someone needs a nap close to the room.

Is the Hoi An old town safe for toddlers?

Safe if you plan for it. The lanes are narrow, scooters pass close and the evening crowds slow everyone down. Use a carrier rather than a wide stroller, hold hands near the river and go early, before the lanterns draw the biggest crowds.

How do we handle meals for fussy eaters?

Choose an area with plain rice, noodle and fruit options within a short walk, and keep a few snacks from home in the bag. Hotel breakfasts usually cover the basics. For dinner, pick places that serve quickly, because hungry toddlers do not wait well.
