Where to Stay in Hoi An

Hoi An is small, but the lantern lanes, the quiet edges and the beach are three different holidays.

For a first visit to Hoi An, stay in the old town or at its edge, so you can walk to the lanterns and the river. Choose the edge if you want a quieter room and a short walk. Choose the beach side only if sea time is your priority, and treat the old town as an evening outing.

Which Hoi An zone suits your trip?

Match the zone to how you want your evenings.

  • First-timers, short leave, photographers: the old town, on a side lane.
  • Couples who want quiet nights: the old town edge, a short walk from the lanterns.
  • Sea breeze, a resort pace, young children: the beach zone near An Bang Beach.
  • Families wanting both: read the beach or old town guide.

What is the old town like to sleep in?

Hoi An Ancient Town was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 19991. It has a wooden Japanese bridge about 10 m long, built at the start of the 17th century2.

The lanes are flat and walkable, which is kind to older legs. They are busy in the evening, with visitors and music near the river. Side lanes are calmer. Our crowds and noise guide shows when to go out and where to sleep.

What is the edge like?

The edge sits a short walk or bike ride from the lanterns, with more space and quieter rooms. You trade a minute or two of walking for a calmer night. It is a good compromise for couples and for light sleepers.

Ask the hotel for the walking route into the old town and whether it is lit at night.

What about the beach side?

The beach zone gives you the sea every day, with resorts and open space. The old town is a short ride away, so plan how you return after dinner. It suits families with young children who need the sea and a pool.

If sea time is the whole point, read Hoi An beach stay or old town stay. For sea and an island day, see the Cham Islands.

How does Hoi An fit with Da Nang?

Hoi An lies about 28 km south of Da Nang3, and My Son is 36 km south of Hoi An4. If you are choosing between the two cities as a base, read Da Nang or Hoi An as your base.

Does the season matter?

The central coast’s rainy season starts in August or September and peaks in October and November5. In heavy rain, low lanes near the river can be hard to use, so ask the hotel what they do on such days. A room with indoor space helps.

What should you check before booking?

  • Whether the lane is quiet at night.
  • The walking route into the old town after dark.
  • Distance to the beach, if sea time matters.
  • Lift or stair access, for older travellers.

Add costs with the trip budget builder. For the town overview, see the Hoi An guide, and for more, Cities and where to stay.

Common questions

Where is the best place to stay in Hoi An for a first visit?

For a first visit, the old town or its edge works best, because you can walk to the lanterns, the river and the main sights. The edge is quieter and still a short walk. Choose the beach side only if sea time is your priority.

Is the old town too crowded and noisy at night?

The lanes are busy in the evening, with visitors and music near the river, and quieter on the side lanes. If you sleep lightly, pick a room on a back lane or at the edge. We cover crowd timing in our old town noise guide.

Can I walk to the beach from the old town?

Not easily. The beaches are a short ride away, so plan a bike, taxi or ride-hailing car. If you want to be on the sand every day, the beach zone is more practical, with the old town as an evening outing.

Which zone is better for couples?

The old town edge suits couples who want lantern evenings and a quiet room. A beach stay suits couples who want sea breeze and a resort pace. Both put the old town within reach for dinner.

How many nights should I spend in Hoi An?

Two nights give you the old town, an evening by the river and a morning at leisure. Three nights add a countryside or beach day. If you want My Son, add half a day. Short leave works with two nights.
