Choosing a base

Use Da Nang or Hoi An as Your Base

With both cities on the trip you unpack once, so pick the one that saves the most days.

Use Da Nang as your base if you land late, want the airport close or plan big day trips such as Ba Na Hills. Use Hoi An as your base if you want slow evenings and a walkable old town and your flights are not tight. For short leave, Da Nang usually saves more days.

How do the two bases compare?

Hoi An lies about 28 km south of Da Nang1, so each is a short ride from the other.

Da Nang International Airport has IATA code DAD2. Direct flights from Kuala Lumpur are listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air3.

Which base fits which trip?

  • Two to three nights, short leave: Da Nang. You spend less on transfers.
  • Four nights or more, slow pace: Hoi An, with a day in Da Nang.
  • Ba Na Hills is a priority: Da Nang. The hills are 42 km from the city4.
  • My Son is a priority: Hoi An, which sits 36 km from it5.
  • Late landing or early flight: Da Nang.

For a feel for each city, read Da Nang beach versus Hoi An old town.

What does the other city cost you?

If you sleep in Da Nang, an evening in Hoi An means a ride there and a ride back. Plan it as one outing and book the return. If you sleep in Hoi An, the airport run and the big day trips start from farther away.

So the trade is simple: Da Nang saves you transfer days, and Hoi An gives you the evenings.

What about Hue?

Hue is a longer move. The Hai Van Pass is about 21 km between Da Nang and Hue6, and Da Nang is 80 km south of Hue’s airport, which has no direct international routes7. On short leave, treat Hue as a day trip from Da Nang.

Should you split nights?

If you have four nights or more, a split can work, with a half day between. Our shared versus split stay guide walks through when it is worth the move. For zones within each city, see where to stay in Da Nang and where to stay in Hoi An.

What should you check before booking?

  • Your landing and departure times against the airport transfer.
  • The big day trip you care about most.
  • Whether anyone needs a lift or flat ground.
  • How each transfer affects your days: use the travel-day checker.

For first-night logistics, read Da Nang airport access. More options sit in Cities and where to stay.

Common questions

Is Da Nang or Hoi An better as a base?

Da Nang is the better base if you want the airport close, a city beach and big day trips such as Ba Na Hills. Hoi An is the better base if you want slow evenings and a walkable old town. For short leave, Da Nang usually saves more time.

Can I stay in Da Nang and still see Hoi An?

Yes. Hoi An is a short drive from Da Nang, so it works as a half-day or evening outing. The cost is the ride back after dinner. If you want to be in the lanterns every evening, sleep in Hoi An instead.

Can I stay in Hoi An and still see Ba Na Hills?

You can, but it is a bigger move. Ba Na Hills is 42 km from Da Nang, so from Hoi An it is a longer day out. If Ba Na and the Marble Mountains matter most, Da Nang is the easier base.

What about Hue?

Hue is a half-day move from Da Nang, over the Hai Van Pass or through the tunnel, and its airport has no direct international routes. Treat it as a day trip or an overnight add-on from your base, not a third base on short leave.

How many nights does each base need?

Two to three nights is enough for either, with half a day of buffer for the airport. Three or four nights lets you add a day trip. Beyond four, consider splitting. Our shared versus split guide helps you decide.
