One Base or a Split Stay?

Unpacking twice costs half a day: decide whether a second hotel earns its place in your plan.

If you have four nights or fewer, stay in one base and take day trips. If you have five or more, a split between Da Nang and Hoi An starts to pay off. The deciding factors are your nights, your luggage and how much you want to wake up in the old town.

What does a hotel move really cost?

More than the ride itself. You pack, eat breakfast, check out and wait for the car. Then you arrive before your new room is ready, and unpack in the afternoon.

Hoi An lies about 28 km from Da Nang1, so the journey is short on paper. The cost is the half day around it. If you are on short leave, that half day is usually better spent at the beach or the old town.

When is one base the right call?

One base works well when:

  • you have four nights or fewer;
  • you travel with toddlers, grandparents or lots of bags;
  • you want a single pool, a single breakfast and a single routine;
  • you plan a day trip to My Son, which lies about 36 km south of Hoi An2.

Choose Da Nang for the beach and flight convenience, or Hoi An for evenings. Our guide on using Da Nang or Hoi An as your base helps with that choice.

When does a split stay earn its place?

Split when you have five nights or more, travel light and want two different moods. A common shape is two or three nights in Hoi An for lantern evenings, then the rest in Da Nang for the beach and the airport.

Put Hoi An first if you arrive late on the Da Nang airport side and want a quiet start. Put it last if you want to end on a slow note. Avoid a move on your arrival or departure day.

How do you keep a move light?

  • Pack a small overnight bag so the large bag can wait in the car.
  • Ask your first hotel about late checkout and luggage storage.
  • Ask your second hotel whether early check-in is possible.
  • Keep the move day free of tours.
  • Check the wet season: Da Nang’s wet and typhoon months run from September to December3, so a rainy move day needs extra patience.

Run your plan through the travel-day checker to see how many hours go on transit. For longer central routes, read two bases or three in Central Vietnam.

Common questions

Should we stay in one hotel for the whole trip?

If you have four nights or fewer, yes. One base saves a morning of packing and transfer, and the two towns are close enough for day trips. Choose the base that matches your pace: Da Nang for beach and flights, Hoi An for evenings in the old town.

When does a split stay make sense?

Five nights or more, or when you want both a beach morning and a lantern evening without a daily ride. Split two or three nights in Hoi An with the rest in Da Nang. Keep the move on a day with no big plans.

How much time does a hotel move take?

Plan on half a day once you add breakfast, checkout, the ride, early check-in problems and unpacking. That is why short trips suit a single base. If you do move, send your large bag ahead and carry only a small day bag.

Is a day trip between Da Nang and Hoi An tiring?

The ride is short, so a single trip is fine. Doing it every day is tiring, especially with children or older relatives, because of the heat, the traffic and the late return. Two or three round trips across a week is a sensible limit.
