One Base in Da Nang for a Week

Unpack once, then reach Hoi An, Hue and Ba Na Hills on separate day trips.

A week in Da Nang from one hotel works well if you want to unpack once and reach Hoi An, Hue and Ba Na Hills on separate days. Put a rest day between the big trips, and treat Hue as the long one. The reasons to choose it are simple, and so are the limits.

Who is this route for?

It suits first-timers who want a calm week, and families with young children who need a steady base. It also suits couples who want beach time and some culture, without moving bags every two nights. If you prefer to compare bases, read one base or many hotels.

Da Nang to Kuala Lumpur International is listed as served by AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. The airport has IATA code DAD and ICAO code VVDN2.

Why choose one base?

There are three good reasons. You unpack once. The beach and pool are always close for rest days. And children and elders keep a stable bed and routine.

The cost is longer days on the road. Hoi An is some 28 km south of Da Nang3, so it is easy. Ba Na Hills and Hue are longer. If you want to stay in Hoi An for the evenings, read the Hoi An slow week as an alternative.

What is the route at a glance?

  • Day 1: arrive, beach evening.
  • Day 2: Da Nang sights and beach.
  • Day 3: Hoi An day trip.
  • Day 4: rest day.
  • Day 5: Hue day trip.
  • Day 6: Ba Na Hills.
  • Day 7: slow morning and flight.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive and settle

Keep the first day empty. Check in, walk the beach and eat a simple dinner. Pick a hotel near the beach or the river, depending on how you like your evenings.

Day 2: Da Nang sights and the beach

Take a morning for the Marble Mountains and an afternoon on the sand. Keep stairs short for anyone tired, and choose a shaded café for lunch.

Day 3: Hoi An

Go to Hoi An in the late morning, spend the afternoon in the old town and stay for the lantern-lit evening. Return before it gets late. Hoi An explains how to arrange the lanes without rushing.

Day 4: rest day

Do nothing. Swim, nap, read, repack or catch up on laundry. This day is the reason the week works, so protect it.

Day 5: Hue

Hue is the long day. The nearest international airport to Hue is Da Nang, 80 km south of Phu Bai6. Leave early and take the Hai Van Tunnel, which opened in 2005 and is 6.28 km long7, if the weather is poor.

The Complex of Hue Monuments joined the World Heritage List in 19938. Hours were listed as 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM in the dry season and 7 AM to 5 PM in the rainy season9, but that is a third-party listing. Confirm before you go.

See one section only, eat lunch in town and return by road. Read Hue as a day trip or overnight stop to decide whether to stay.

Day 6: Ba Na Hills

Ba Na Hills is at 1,500 m elevation, 42 km from Da Nang4. Sun World’s page shows it closing at 22:00, but notes that hours may change5. Go in the morning, when it is cooler, and bring a light jacket.

Come back for a late lunch and a swim. Our Ba Na Hills guide explains the cable car and the village.

Day 7: slow morning and flight

Keep the morning free. Pack the night before and leave for the airport with time to spare.

When is the weather best?

Da Nang’s dry season runs from January to August, and its wet and typhoon season from September to December10. In the wet months, treat Hue and Ba Na as flexible days. Check the month-by-month rainfall pattern before you fix your dates.

When does one base stop working?

If you want evenings in Hoi An, two bases are kinder. If you want more than a day in Hue, move there for a night. If you want quiet islands, add the Cham Islands. Our guide to two bases or three in central Vietnam lays out the options.

What should we book ahead?

  • Flights, which set every other date.
  • A hotel near the beach or river, with a clear cancellation rule.
  • A private car for Hue and Ba Na days.
  • Tickets for Ba Na Hills, once you have checked closing times and weather.

What will it cost?

Price it in lines: flights, six nights, three car days, tickets and meals. Prices change by season, so use today’s quotes in the trip budget builder. To compare with other bases, browse more itineraries.

Common questions

Why use one hotel for a whole week?

Because you unpack once, the beach is always close and children get a stable base. Da Nang has the airport and sits near all three day-trip targets. The trade-off is a few longer days on the road, so it works best when you want rest between outings.

Is Hue possible as a day trip from Da Nang?

Yes, but it is the longest day. The road crosses the Hai Van area. Start early, take the tunnel in poor weather and keep the visit to one section. If you want a calmer Hue, see our day trip or overnight guide.

When is the best time for this plan?

The dry season, January to August, is the easier window. Da Nang lists September to December as its wet and typhoon season, so day trips are likelier to be cancelled then. If you must travel in those months, keep the Hue and Ba Na days flexible.

How many nights should we spend before moving?

For a week, stay put. If you have ten days or more, consider two bases, one in Da Nang and one in Hoi An. That cuts the evening drives to the old town, and our two-bases guide explains the trade-off.

Is this good for a family with young children?

Yes, because you unpack once and the hotel works as a nap base. Keep one outing a day, put a rest day between the big trips and skip Hue if the children travel poorly in cars. The beach and pool days will carry the holiday.
