Hotel plan

One Base or Many Hotels in Vietnam?

Packing again every other day wears families down: decide how many hotels the trip can afford.

For a one-week trip, use one base or two, and at most three hotels. Every move costs about a morning, plus packing. Families with toddlers or older relatives should lean to one base and day trips, even when the map invites a move.

What does each hotel move really cost?

It costs three things, and only one of them is money.

  • Packing: every move means gathering bags, chargers and wet swimwear again.
  • Lost mornings: check-out, a ride and a late check-in use up half a day.
  • Flexibility: hotel dates fix your plan, so a rainy day cannot move freely.

Money matters too, since transfers and baggage add up. Use your own quotes in the trip budget builder and compare plans line by line.

How many hotels fit how many nights?

Use this as a starting rule, then adjust.

NightsSuggested hotelsWhy
Four or fewerOneA move would eat a quarter of the trip
Five to sevenOne or twoOne move is affordable
Eight to tenTwo or threeMoves are absorbed by longer stays
Eleven or moreThree or fourSpace the moves, rest between them

When does one base work best?

One base works when the places you want are close to one city. Hoi An lies some 28 km south of Da Nang1, so one stay covers both. Noi Bai airport is about 35 km north-east of downtown Hanoi2, so a Hanoi base also keeps the airport transfer simple.

We have week-long plans built around a single city: Da Nang with day trips, Hanoi with day trips and HCMC with day trips.

When does moving make sense?

Move when the places are far apart, when day trips would run too long, or when you have enough nights to absorb the move. A north-to-south trip needs flights, so a new hotel at each stop is part of the plan. Even then, count the moves before you add stops.

What should you check?

  • Your real arrival and departure times, counted as half days.
  • How many bags you carry, and whether the next hotel can hold them early.
  • Who in your group tires fastest, and plan around them.
  • Whether you can swap a rainy day, which is easier from one base.

What is the next step?

Run your dates through the travel-day checker. For central Vietnam, read Two bases or three in central Vietnam. More planning methods are in the planning tools hub.

Common questions

How many hotels are right for a one-week Vietnam trip?

Two is a comfortable limit for most one-week trips, and three is the most we would suggest. Each extra hotel costs a morning for checking out and moving. If you travel with toddlers or older relatives, one base with day trips is calmer.

Is one base cheaper than moving around?

Not automatically. Moving adds transfers and sometimes extra baggage costs, but a single base may mean longer day trips. Compare the two with real quotes in the budget builder, so the answer comes from your numbers and not a guess.

When does hotel-hopping make sense?

When the places are far apart, so day trips would be too long, and when you have enough nights to absorb the moves. A trip from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City needs flights anyway, so a hotel change at each stop is part of the plan.

How do I keep flexibility with one base?

Book the hotel for the whole stay and decide the day trips as you go. Leave the weather-sensitive outings until the forecast is clear. You can also leave one day empty, so a missed outing has somewhere to go.
