Itinerary

Hanoi as Your Only Base for a Week

Keep one hotel in the capital and let the mountains, rivers and sea come to you as trips.

You can see the north of Vietnam without changing hotels once. Stay in Hanoi, travel out for Ninh Binh, Tam Dao and Ha Long Bay, and return to the same bed. The cost is road time, so this plan spaces the trips out and gives you rest days in between.

Who is this week for?

It suits first-timers and culture seekers who want the capital’s heritage plus three landscapes. It also helps families and older travellers, because luggage moves only twice, on arrival and departure. If you want slow mornings in a mountain town or a night on a karst river, a second hotel may suit you better.

You fly into Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport. Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi is listed as served by AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. The airport is about 35 km northeast of downtown2, so plan a proper transfer. Public bus 86 runs from the terminals to the Old Quarter and the railway station, with the fare listed at 45,000 VND when we checked3.

The week at a glance

  • Day 1: arrive and walk near the hotel.
  • Day 2: the Old Quarter and the heritage citadel.
  • Day 3: Ninh Binh as a day trip.
  • Day 4: Tam Dao as a day trip.
  • Day 5: to Ha Long Bay for one night.
  • Day 6: the bay in the morning, back to Hanoi in the afternoon.
  • Day 7: a slow morning and your flight.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive and stay close

Check in, eat near the hotel and walk a little. Hanoi’s mean temperature runs from 16.4 C in January to 29.2 C in July8, so pack for the month you travel.

Day 2: the Old Quarter and the citadel

Walk the Old Quarter in the morning, when the lanes are quieter. The central sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long was inscribed in 20104, and it gives the city a long story to match the street life.

If you want a Muslim anchor, Al-Noor Mosque on Hang Luoc Street was built between 1885 and 1890 and holds about 200 people7. Confirm prayer times with the mosque.

Day 3: Ninh Binh and its rivers

Trang An Landscape Complex was inscribed in 20145. Go early by car, take a river boat among the limestone hills, then return in the afternoon. Our guide to Ninh Binh explains how long to stay.

Day 4: Tam Dao, the cool escape

Tam Dao is a hill town near Hanoi, a good day when the capital feels hot. Go as a day trip, walk gently, eat lunch and return before dark. If rain or fog closes in, swap the day with a second Ninh Binh outing or an easy Hanoi day. Read more about Tam Dao.

Day 5: to Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay was inscribed in 1994 and later extended6. This is your long road day, so travel after breakfast and board a boat or choose a land base. Plan most of the day for the move.

Keep the evening quiet on the water. Ask the operator what is served, because halal needs checking, not assuming.

Day 6: the bay, then home to Hanoi

Enjoy a slow morning on the water, then head back to Hanoi after lunch. Do not plan a large dinner. A simple meal and an early night will set you up for the flight.

Day 7: a calm departure

Keep the morning free and give the airport transfer extra time. Hanoi traffic is slow near rush hour.

Should you swap any day?

Yes. Swap Tam Dao for a second Ninh Binh day if the forecast is misty or hot, or if the group tires easily. Swap the Ha Long overnight for a day trip only if your leave is short, and see Ninh Binh versus Ha Long Bay before choosing.

Where should you stay in Hanoi?

Choose by area, not hotel name. The Old Quarter is lively and convenient for evenings, though noisy. A quieter area near the lakes suits families and seniors. Compare rates yourself, and see the Hanoi guide for the zones.

What should you book ahead?

  • Your flights and the airport transfer.
  • A private car for the Ninh Binh and Tam Dao days.
  • The Ha Long overnight, with the meal arrangements confirmed in writing.
  • Halal checks, with a displayed certificate and an issuer you can name.

What will it cost?

Price the week in lines: flights, six nights, the three trips, transfers, meals and extras. Rates move by season, so use the trip budget builder with current quotes. For other short escapes from the capital, read short breaks near Hanoi.

Tell us your leave dates and whether you want Ha Long as a day or a night, and we can order the three trips around Hanoi so the long road days never fall together.

Common questions

Is it better to stay in Hanoi all week or change hotels?

Staying in Hanoi saves the packing and the check-in time, and the three trips here start from the capital anyway. Change hotels only if you want a night in Ninh Binh for sunrise or a night in Tam Dao for cool air. Our one-base guide compares the two styles.

Should Ha Long Bay be a day trip or an overnight?

An overnight gives you a calmer evening on the water and avoids two long road days in one. A day trip fits tight leave but feels rushed. If anyone is elderly or travelling with small children, choose the overnight and keep the next morning light.

How many days in Hanoi itself?

Give the city two full days plus evenings. That covers the Old Quarter, the heritage citadel, a museum or two and slow meals. Spreading Hanoi over the whole week works well because every other day has a long return drive, so you will want easy days between.

Is this week suitable for Muslim travellers?

Yes, with checking. Hanoi has a mosque you can use as an anchor, and trips from the capital let you return to the same kitchens each night. Ask about certificates, the issuing body and suppliers, and carry snacks for the day trips where choices are fewer.
