Rainy-Day Plan for Da Nang and Hoi An

Rain on the forecast does not have to empty your day: keep one indoor swap ready for each.

Keep one indoor swap ready for every outdoor day, and decide at breakfast. A rainy morning then moves your plan around instead of ending it. In the wet months, add a spare day so a swap does not push out a must-do.

When does it rain in Da Nang and Hoi An?

Da Nang lists September to December as its wet and typhoon season, with January to August as the dry season1. October is the wettest month, at about 628 mm of rain2. On the wider central coast, rain starts in August or September and peaks in October and November3.

If you travel in those months, the plan below matters more. If you travel in the dry months, treat it as insurance. Our weather by month guide shows your month.

What are the indoor swaps, day by day?

Pair each outdoor stop with a swap in the same area, so you do not spend the rain in a car.

Arrival day

Skip the beach walk. Swap it for a hotel pool, a long lunch and an early check-in call. Rain on arrival day costs you almost nothing.

Beach day

Swap the sand for a spa session, a mall visit or a cafe afternoon. With toddlers, use the hotel pool or play area and keep the nap.

Hoi An old town day

Hoi An lies about 28 km south of Da Nang5, so a short ride puts you under cover. Swap the lantern walk for a cooking class, a tailor fitting or a lantern-making workshop. The Japanese bridge and the lane walk can wait for a dry evening.

Ba Na Hills day

Ba Na Hills is at 1,500 m, 42 km from Da Nang6, so cloud can cover the views. Swap in a Da Nang museum, a covered market and an indoor food court, then try Ba Na on a clearer morning.

Marble Mountains day

The Marble Mountains include a gateway to Huyen Khong Cave4, which gives some cover. Wet steps can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip. If it is pouring, swap to a stone-carving workshop visit and a long cafe stop.

What should you pack and book for rain?

  • A light rain jacket for each person, not an umbrella that fights the wind.
  • A dry bag for phones and passports.
  • Flexible tickets and tour bookings, with the cancellation terms written down.
  • One spare day, kept free for the swaps.
  • Grab rides ready on your phone for short hops.

Common questions

Is it worth going to Da Nang and Hoi An in the rainy season?

It can be, if you plan for it. Rain comes in bursts, so you can still have dry hours. Keep indoor swaps ready, book flexible tickets and keep a spare day. If your trip falls in the peak rainy months, ask whether another region fits your month better.

What can we do with toddlers when it rains?

Use a hotel pool or play area, a covered market and a long lunch. Add one short indoor outing each day, such as a cooking class or lantern workshop that welcomes children. Keep nap times fixed, because a tired toddler and wet pavements do not mix.

Should I book Ba Na Hills on a rainy day?

Ba Na Hills is high in the hills, so rain and cloud can hide the views. Choose a clear forecast day if you can, and keep the booking flexible. If the cloud sets in, swap to an indoor day and try Ba Na on another morning.

How do we decide in the morning whether to swap?

Check the forecast at breakfast, look at the sky and decide by a fixed time. If rain is forecast for the whole morning, choose the indoor swap and move the outdoor stop to the afternoon or to another day in the week.
