Mui Ne: Dunes, Kitesurf and Resort Strip
A long resort road, red dunes and steady wind: what Mui Ne gives and what it does not.
Mui Ne is a long strip of beach resorts along one coastal road, with red and white sand dunes close by. It suits friends, photographers and anyone who wants wind, space and quiet evenings. It is a weaker choice if you want a swimming beach that is calm every day.
What kind of place is Mui Ne?
Mui Ne is a fishing village that grew into a resort coast on the south-central shore, beside the city of Phan Thiet. Resorts sit in a line facing the sea, with restaurants and small shops on the road behind them. Read Phan Thiet, the city beside Mui Ne to see how the two fit together.
Vietnam’s south and centre have two seasons, a rainy season and a dry season1. The wind and the sea mood change with those seasons, so check Vietnam weather by month before you fix your dates.
What can you see and do?
Group your activities by time of day, because the dunes look best in soft light.
- Sand dunes: the red dunes and the white dunes are the main sights. Go at sunrise or late afternoon, when the light is kind and the sand is cooler.
- Fishing village: the harbour is busiest in the early morning, and it is a good place for photographers.
- Fairy Stream: a shallow walk through coloured sand and water, easy for most ages.
- Kitesurf and windsurf: schools line the beach, and beginners can try a lesson. Choose a school that explains its safety rules before you pay.
- Beach time: pick a resort with a pool as a backup for rough-sea days.
How honest is the sea and wind picture?
The wind is the reason sports fans come. It also means the water is lively on windy days, and swimming is not always relaxed. Narrow sand in front of some resorts is another point to check.
If you travel with toddlers, ask the hotel about wave conditions and pool depth. Our guide to beach stays with toddlers lists what to look for.
How long should you stay?
Two nights covers the dunes and one beach day. Three nights suit kitesurfing lessons or a slow rest after a busy city week.
How do you get there from Malaysia?
Mui Ne has no international flights of its own. Fly into Ho Chi Minh City, where Tan Son Nhat Airport is served from Kuala Lumpur by Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia2. Then continue by road.
Plan most of a day for the transfer, and build it into your short leave. Our travel-day checker shows how much of a trip a transfer eats.
Where should you base yourself?
Pick a stretch of the strip first. The part nearer Phan Thiet has more restaurants and shops.
Stretches further out are quieter, but you will rely on Grab or hotel transport. Our resort strip or town centre guide explains the trade.
What about families, seniors and Muslim travellers?
Families should pick a resort with a gentle pool and a shaded play area. Seniors do well with a ground-floor room, a short walk to the beach and easy dune trips that avoid steep climbs.
Binh Thuan province is home to a Bani Cham community that practises Islam3, but that does not mean a halal restaurant sits on every corner. Read our halal beach guide and check each meal arrangement before you travel.
When is another place a better choice?
If you want a lively town with a long list of restaurants, Nha Trang fits better. Compare the two in Mui Ne or Nha Trang. For wider planning, browse Cities and where to stay.

Common questions
How many days do you need in Mui Ne?
Two nights is enough for the dunes, the fishing village and a slow beach day. Add a third night if you want to learn kitesurfing or simply rest. If you only have a long weekend from Kuala Lumpur, remember that the road transfer from Ho Chi Minh City takes a good part of a day.
Is Mui Ne good for swimming?
It depends on the day. The same wind that draws kitesurfers can make the sea choppy, and some stretches have narrow sand. Calm mornings are kinder for children and nervous swimmers. Choose a resort with a pool, and ask the hotel which stretch of beach is calmest in your travel month.
Is Mui Ne better than Nha Trang?
Neither wins for everyone. Mui Ne is quieter, more spread out and built around wind sports and dunes. Nha Trang is a bigger city with more restaurants and easier flights from Malaysia. Our comparison guide sets them side by side for couples, families and groups of friends.
Can Muslim travellers eat well in Mui Ne?
Plan ahead, because the resort strip is small. Ask each place who issued any halal certificate on display, or choose Muslim-owned kitchens and ask about suppliers. Pork-free is not the same as certified. Pack a few safe snacks for the transfer day and read our halal beach guide first.
