Cat Ba Island

Hanoi to Cat Ba Island: How the Journey Really Works

With a few days of leave, see how much time the trip to Cat Ba takes.

Reaching Cat Ba from Hanoi means a road leg, a boat leg and a short road leg on the island. Most visitors buy a combined bus-and-boat ticket. Count the whole transfer as most of a day taken from your leave, and give Cat Ba at least two nights.

What are the routes from Hanoi?

There are two broad ways to reach the island. Both start with a road journey out of the capital.

  • Via Hai Phong: a coach or minibus runs to a river or sea pier on the Hai Phong side. A ferry or fast boat then crosses to the Cat Hai and Cat Ba side.
  • Via the Ha Long side: the road leg ends at a pier near Ha Long city, and the boat goes across the bay. The crossing passes through the same area UNESCO calls Ha Long Bay-Cat Ba Archipelago1.

Both routes finish with a short drive to Cat Ba town. Ask the seller which pier your ticket uses, because piers differ in distance from the town and in what is waiting at the end.

How are tickets sold?

You will meet two styles. A combined ticket covers bus, boat and the island leg in one booking, so one operator is responsible if a leg slips. Separate tickets let you choose your own boat, but you must time the connection yourself.

Whichever you pick, ask four questions: which pier, who collects you at the island end, what the return leg looks like, and what happens if the boat is cancelled for weather.

How much leave does the transfer cost?

Treat the transfer as most of a day each way. You travel by road, wait for the boat, cross, then drive again. Noi Bai airport itself lies about 35 km north-east of downtown Hanoi4, so landing in the morning does not mean you reach Cat Ba by lunch.

Fast boats save some water time, but they are more sensitive to sea conditions. The slower car ferry is steadier, which suits older relatives and small children. Our travel-day checker shows whether a day with this transfer is too full.

Can you fly closer?

Not from Malaysia. Cat Bi airport near Hai Phong carries the code HPH2, but it lists no Malaysian airlines or destinations3. You fly to Hanoi and continue by road.

When can the boat leg be disrupted?

Vietnam is affected by 6 to 8 typhoons or tropical cyclones a year6. In the Red River Delta the rainy season starts in April or May and ends in October or November5. In wet or windy spells, boats may be delayed or cancelled.

Build a spare half day before your flight home. Never leave Cat Ba on the same day you fly out.

Is Cat Ba right for your trip?

Give it two nights or skip it. One night spends the stay on the road. If you have fewer days, a Ha Long day trip or Cat Ba or Lan Ha Bay: choosing a base may suit you better. For nearer options, see short breaks near Hanoi.

Common questions

How do you get from Hanoi to Cat Ba Island?

Most visitors take a combined bus-and-boat ticket. A coach or minibus leaves Hanoi for a pier on the Hai Phong or Ha Long side, then a ferry or fast boat crosses to Cat Ba, and a short road leg takes you to Cat Ba town. Ask the seller to name the pier and who meets you on arrival.

Is there a direct flight to Cat Ba from Malaysia?

No. Cat Bi, the Hai Phong airport, lists no Malaysian airlines or destinations, so you reach Cat Ba by flying into Hanoi first. Plan the island as a later leg of your trip, after you have landed and slept in the capital, rather than as a same-day connection.

How long does the whole trip take?

Count the transfer as most of a day, not a short hop. You travel by road, wait for the boat, cross the water and then drive again on the island. Because boat times shift with weather and tide, do not book a flight home on the same day you leave Cat Ba.

Is the hydrofoil or fast boat better than the slow ferry?

Fast boats cut the water time but are more affected by sea conditions, and some seats are enclosed with little view. The car ferry is slower and steadier, which suits older relatives and families with small children. Ask which vessel type your ticket includes before you pay.

Can we do Cat Ba as a short trip from Hanoi?

Only if you give it two nights. A single night spends almost the whole stay in transit. Two nights allow one full day for the bay, a kayak or boat trip, and a calm morning before you head back. With less leave than that, a Ha Long day trip or a cruise is the better use of time.
