How to Choose Stops on the Central Coast
Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue or a quieter town: pick stops by how you like to travel.
Choose Da Nang as your landing base and Hoi An for the old town. Add Hue only when you have enough days to move without rushing. For a beach-first trip, a quieter town beats a third busy stop.
Which stops match your travel style?
Pick by how you like your days to feel, then count the days.
- Beach and easy logistics: Da Nang.
- Lantern streets and slow walks: Hoi An.
- History and palace halls: Hue.
- Calm and fewer visitors: a quieter coast town, such as Quy Nhon.
- Short leave: two stops at most.
How do the stops compare?
| Stop | Character | Effort from Da Nang | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Da Nang | Beach city, airport base | None | Beach days, families, easy arrival |
| Hoi An | Old town and lanterns | Short drive | Couples, food, slow walking |
| Hue | Imperial history | A half-day move | Culture seekers with spare days |
| Quieter coast town | Calm sand, little else | Flight or long road | Return visitors who want quiet |
How far apart are they?
Hoi An lies about 28 km south of Da Nang4, so you can base in one and visit the other. Hue is the outlier. Da Nang is the nearest international airport and is 80 km south of Hue’s own airport3, which has no direct international routes2.
The road passes the Hai Van Pass, a mountain road about 21 km long5. A 6.28 km tunnel, opened in 2005, bypasses the pass6. Count this move as most of a morning, and do not pack it between a late flight and an early tour.
What do the heritage stops offer?
Hue’s Complex of Monuments was inscribed by UNESCO in 19937. Hoi An Ancient Town followed in 19998. Both reward slow walking and a guide who explains what you see, so schedule them for cooler hours.
If you only have time for one of the two, read Da Nang, Hoi An or Hue: which stop matters most. For whether Hue needs a night, see Hue as a day trip or overnight.
When does the weather change the pick?
Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December9. On the central coast, rain starts around August or September and peaks in October and November10. In those months pick Hue and Hoi An, which hold up better, and treat beach days as a bonus. Our weather by month guide lays out each month.
How does it work from Malaysia?
Da Nang to Kuala Lumpur is listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Check current schedules on the airline sites. From other Malaysian airports you may need a connection, so confirm before choosing your base.
How many bases suit your pace?
Every base change costs a morning. Slow couples and seniors usually feel better with two bases, and our two bases or three guide explains why. Families should read Central Vietnam with kids before choosing.
What should you do next?
Count your real days, mark your month and choose two stops. Then try the north, central or south route chooser. For the full picture, see the Central Vietnam travel guide and Regions and where to go.

Common questions
How many stops should a first central Vietnam trip have?
Two is enough for most short trips, three for a longer one. Da Nang and Hoi An form an easy pair, and Hue is the add-on when you have days to spare. More stops means more packing and checking out, which is the quickest way to lose beach and rest time.
Which stop should I drop first if time is short?
Drop Hue first, because it needs the longest move and has no direct international flights. Keep Da Nang as your landing base and Hoi An for the old town. If you still want Hue, treat it as a long day trip from Da Nang rather than a hotel change.
Is Da Nang or Hoi An the better base?
Da Nang suits beach days, easy airport access and bigger hotels. Hoi An suits evening lantern streets and slow walking but is farther from the airport. Couples can base in Hoi An and day-trip to Da Nang; families may prefer Da Nang's wider beach. Our comparison guide goes deeper.
Are quieter coast towns worth the extra effort?
Yes, if beaches and calm matter more than sights. Quiet towns have fewer visitors and slower days, but flights, transfers and tourist services are thinner. They suit return visitors and confident travellers more than first-timers on short leave.
What about the rainy months?
Plan carefully. The central coast's rainy season starts around August or September and peaks in October and November, so beach plans can fail. Choose Hue's museums and covered markets, Hoi An's shops and cafes, and keep one spare day. Check your month in the weather guide.
