Central Vietnam on a Return Visit
After the beach and the lanterns, here is what else the centre offers.
If you have done Da Nang and Hoi An, the best second trip adds depth, not more of the same beach. Give Hue a full night, add My Son as a half-day, and choose either Phong Nha or Quy Nhon if you have the days. Each of these asks for more road or a different flight than your first visit did.
Which place deserves a night, not a rush?
Hue. The Complex of Hue Monuments was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 19931. A first visit can squeeze it into one tiring day out of Da Nang.
Hue’s airport has no direct international routes3. Da Nang is the nearest international airport, 80 km south of Phu Bai2. So you keep flying into Da Nang and move north by road, which our Hue day trip or overnight guide walks through. The Hue destination page covers where to stay.
Is My Son worth a half-day?
My Son was recognised as a World Heritage Site in 19994. It lies about 68 km southwest of Da Nang city centre and 36 km south of Hoi An5.
It suits you if the old town impressed you and you want to meet the Cham story behind this coast. Go early, keep the afternoon free and treat it as one outing, not a full day.
When do Phong Nha and Quy Nhon make sense?
Both need their own days, and they pull in opposite directions.
- Phong Nha: caves and river scenery. The national park was inscribed in 20036 and sits about 40 km northwest of Dong Hoi7. Read Is Phong Nha worth adding first.
- Quy Nhon: a quieter coast town and a slower week. See Quy Nhon and the Da Nang or Quy Nhon beach comparison.
Neither is an easy add-on to a four-day trip. Choose one, not both.
Which month suits a second trip?
Rain on the central coast starts in August or September and peaks in October and November8. A return visit in those months needs a backup plan, and the wet weather backup guide lists stops that still work.
How many bases should you use?
Two. A familiar base in Da Nang plus one new stop is calmer than three hotels in five days. Our two bases or three guide shows how to decide.
For the wider picture, see the Central Vietnam travel guide and Regions and where to go.

Common questions
What should I add to central Vietnam if I have already done Da Nang and Hoi An?
Start with a proper night in Hue, then add My Son as a half-day. If you have more days and want something new, choose between Phong Nha for caves and Quy Nhon for a quiet coast. Each one replaces a beach day, so pick the one that matches why you are returning.
Is Quy Nhon a good second-trip choice?
It suits travellers who liked the central coast but found Da Nang busy. The pace is slower and the beach is the main event. It adds travel time, so give it at least two nights, and read our Da Nang or Quy Nhon comparison before you drop a Da Nang base.
Can I see Hue without staying overnight?
You can, but a day trip leaves little room for the citadel, the tombs and a calm lunch. If you already did Hue in a rush last time, this is the stop that most deserves a night. The Hue day trip or overnight guide helps you decide.
