Choosing a Ho Chi Minh City Base

Ho Chi Minh City is huge: pick the district that matches what your days will actually look like.

For a first visit, District 1 is the easiest base because the sights, markets and restaurants sit close together. Move to District 3 or Thao Dien if you want calmer evenings, and to the airport area for a one-night stop. Pick by what your days will look like, not by the map alone.

Why is the choice of base so important?

Ho Chi Minh City had 14,002,598 people in 20252. It is a large, sprawling city, and a ride across it can take a long time in the traffic. A base near what you want to do saves hours.

The city has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season from December to April3. In the rainy months, afternoon showers make short rides and indoor options matter even more.

Is District 1 always the right call?

Not always. It is the easiest start, but it is also the busiest. Rooms facing main streets can be loud, and the centre can feel crowded in the evening. If you have time, spend the first two nights there and then decide whether to move.

For a direct comparison of the two central districts, read District 1 vs District 3. It looks at convenience, quiet and evening life.

What if you only have one night?

Treat the base as a place to sleep, not a destination. Tan Son Nhat International Airport has the code SGN1. It is served by Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia on the Kuala Lumpur route4.

If you arrive late, an airport-area hotel keeps the ride short. Our guide on one night in HCMC explains which area fits which arrival time.

How do day trips change the base?

If you plan a Cu Chi tunnels visit, note that Ben Dinh is closer to the city than Ben Duoc5, so it is the easier half-day. For early pick-ups, pick a district with easy meeting points. District 1 is usually the simplest.

How do you decide?

Ask three questions:

  • What will you do in the day? Sights and food point to District 1.

  • What do you want at night? Quiet points to District 3 or Thao Dien.

  • How long are you staying? One night points to the airport area.

Common questions

Which district is best for a first-time visitor to Ho Chi Minh City?

District 1 is the easiest start. Landmarks, markets, restaurants and the river sit close together, and taxis and ride-hailing cars are easy to find. It is lively and busy, so ask for a hotel on a side street if you are a light sleeper.

Is it better to stay in District 1 or somewhere quieter?

It depends on your days. If you want to walk to sights and eat out every night, District 1 saves time. If you prefer calm evenings and cafes, District 3 or Thao Dien suits you, with a short ride to the centre.

Where should we stay if we are only in HCMC for one night?

Stay near the airport if you land late or leave early. The Tan Binh area keeps the ride short and the check-in simple. If you have a full day free, District 1 gives you more to see in the hours you have.

How many days do we need in Ho Chi Minh City?

Three days gives you the main sights, a good meal or two and a half-day trip. Two days works if you move fast. One night is just a stopover. Give the city longer if you want day trips to the Mekong Delta or Cu Chi.
