How to Get to Con Dao Without Betting on the Sea
Reach a quiet island in a way that will not break your leave.
The practical way to reach Con Dao is by air: fly to Ho Chi Minh City, then take a short domestic flight to the island. The sea route exists, but it depends on the weather and is not the plan to build a fixed trip around. Give the island at least three nights, and keep a spare day before your flight home.
What is the route from Malaysia?
Ho Chi Minh City’s main airport is Tan Son Nhat, with the code SGN1. It is served from Kuala Lumpur by Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia2. You land there, then change to a domestic flight for the island.
Book the two flights on one itinerary if you can, or leave a generous gap between them. A short domestic aircraft has less baggage allowance than a long-haul cabin, so check weight rules with the airline.
What about the sea route?
Boats run from the mainland, but the crossing depends on sea conditions. Rough water can delay or cancel sailings, and a long crossing on a small vessel is hard on older relatives, small children and anyone prone to seasickness.
If you are curious, treat the boat as a one-way adventure with spare days at either end. Do not use it to connect to a flight. Our island ferry safety checklist lists what to check before you board.
When is the weather a problem?
Vietnam is affected by 6 to 8 typhoons or tropical cyclones a year4. In the south, the rainy season starts in May3. Rain and wind raise the chance that a flight or boat is delayed.
That does not make the rainy months impossible. It means you plan slack. See Vietnam weather by month before you pick dates.
How do you protect the return?
- Add a spare night in Ho Chi Minh City before the flight home.
- Keep the Con Dao hotel booking flexible if you can.
- Never book the international flight for the day after you leave the island.
- Ask your insurer what it covers for cancelled domestic flights.
Is Con Dao worth the effort?
It rewards slow travellers. If you want quiet nature and history, read Con Dao: Quiet Island With a Heavy History. If you cannot spare the slack, Con Dao or Phu Quoc compares it with an easier island.

Common questions
What is the easiest way to reach Con Dao from Malaysia?
Fly to Ho Chi Minh City first, then take a short domestic flight to the island. Kuala Lumpur has direct flights to Ho Chi Minh City, so the first leg is simple. The island leg is a small-aircraft hop, so book the later flight with room to spare and keep the baggage allowance in mind.
Can I go to Con Dao by boat instead?
There are sea routes from the mainland, but they are slower and depend on the sea. Rough water can delay or cancel sailings, and the crossing can be uncomfortable even on a good day. Treat the boat as a backup or an adventure, not as the plan your whole trip depends on.
Is Con Dao a good choice for a short leave?
It can be, but only if you accept the transfer as part of the trip. Allow at least three nights so one day lost to a flight change does not remove your time on the island. If you only have a few days, a mainland beach city may use your leave better.
What happens if my flight to Con Dao is cancelled?
You may lose a night on the island or be stuck on the mainland. Keep the hotel booking flexible, do not book your flight home for the day after you leave, and ask your travel insurance what it covers for cancelled domestic flights. Tell your hotel as soon as you know.
