Da Nang to Hue: Pick Transport by Your Stops

Short leave and a few stops you want: choose the transfer that fits them.

Choose the car if you want to stop on the way, the train if the coast view is the point, and a shuttle if you travel light and go straight there. The right answer depends on your stops, not on which option sounds quickest. Treat the move as half a day either way.

Which transport fits which traveller?

Match the option to your day first.

  • Direct move, light luggage: a shared shuttle or the train. Simple and low effort.
  • Stops at the pass or Lang Co: a private car, because the driver waits while you look around.
  • Toddlers or grandparents: a private car, so you can pause for a toilet break or a rest.
  • Coast view without driving: the train, with a window seat.
  • Tight leave: whatever gets you into Hue before dusk with energy left.

Where does the Hai Van Pass fit?

The pass is about 21 km of mountain road on National Route 1 between Da Nang and Hue1. A tunnel opened in 2005 and bypasses it2, which is why some vehicles skip the bends entirely.

If you want the view, ask the driver to take the pass and stop at a viewpoint. If you only want to arrive, the tunnel route is calmer. Our Hai Van Pass guide explains the drive, train and stop choices in more detail.

Why not just fly into Hue?

Because Hue’s airport has no direct international routes4. Da Nang is the nearest international airport, about 80 km south of Phu Bai3.

So the usual pattern is: fly KL to Da Nang, spend your first night there or in Hoi An, then move to Hue. Read Hue: Imperial City and Whether to Stay to decide how long to give it.

What should you check before booking?

  • Whether you will stop, and for how long.
  • Whether anyone gets carsick on bends.
  • Your Hue arrival time against check-in and sunset.
  • For the train, the official booking site listed by Vietnam Railways5.

Then run your plan through the travel-day checker. For the wider picture, see Getting around Vietnam, and for the stops before the move, read Da Nang City Guide.

Common questions

Is a private car or the train better from Da Nang to Hue?

A private car suits you if you want to stop at the pass or Lang Co, or travel with luggage, children or elders. The train suits you if the coast view is the point and you are happy with set times. Decide by your stops first, then by comfort.

Can I fly into Hue from Malaysia?

No. Hue's airport has no direct international routes, so Malaysians fly into Da Nang or another gateway and continue by road or rail. Plan the transfer as part of your trip, not as an afterthought.

Is the Hai Van Pass safe for seniors?

The pass is a winding mountain road, so it can tire anyone prone to motion sickness. A private car with a steady driver and a short viewpoint stop is gentler than a long ride on the bends. If your parents dislike curves, use the tunnel or the train.

How early should I leave Da Nang if I want to stop on the way?

Leave in the morning and treat the transfer as a half-day outing, not a quick hop. Stops at the pass, a beach or lunch add up fast. Keep the Hue arrival before dusk so check-in is calm.

Do I need to book the train in advance?

Book ahead in busy months and school holidays, since popular times fill up. Vietnam Railways lists its official booking site, and you should use that rather than a random reseller. Keep a flexible backup, such as a car, in case seats run out.
